Aubrey Plaza’s husband, Jeff Baena, died by suicide on January 3, 2025. However, following his death, it seems that the actress has deactivated her Instagram account, although it is unclear whether she has permanently deleted it.

Baena, 47, was found unresponsive at his Los Angeles home. Plaza and Baena’s family described his death as a heartbreaking tragedy, thanking those who offered support and requesting privacy.

The news of the actress deactivating her Instagram account has drawn reactions from netizens. Many wished her well-being, while others pondered why she would do that. One X user wrote:

“I don't blame her. People are turning this into a joke. It is NOT funny. She lost a loved one.”

Netizens reacted that it was a smart move by Aubrey Plaza as this could help her grieve.

“i really hope she’s doing alright :( people are awful and she doesn’t deserve this,” a social media user commented.
“Smart move. She said she hates social media anyway. And from experience, it usually ends up with you comparing your life to others and getting depressed, especially when you’re going through something difficult,” a netizen reacted.

Social media users backlashed the critics for not being empathetic towards Aubrey Plaza.

“Ugh... so much pain when a loved one takes their life. Like, how does that make the living feel? She probably feels like she failed himOr she didn't let him know how important he was to her. She probably feels anger, too. She deserves a good break from the public eye,” an online commentator mentioned.
“Why is this even news? HER HUSBAND JUST COMMITTED SUICIDE LEAVE HER ALONE SO SHE CAN GRIEVE,” another person remarked.
“Poor soul. Can't even grieve without getting bombarded with questionable antics. This is where the social media freedom and anonymity start to feel unreasonable,” an internet user opined.

Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena had an impromptu wedding during COVID-19

The duo married in 2021 after dating for almost a decade. Following his death, Aubrey Plaza canceled her Golden Globes appearance on January 5, 2025. In a 2021 interview with Drew Barrymore, she shared that working with her husband on films was rewarding and challenging.

Aubrey Plaza talked about her pandemic wedding on numerous occasions. In a 2021 interview with Ellen DeGeneres, she said:

“It was our ten-year anniversary. We were in the lockdown, as you know. Things got a little crazy especially in my house.”

She continued:

“My husband got really into tie-dying and when I say into tie-dying, I mean 50 shirts a day and I just said, ‘Hey, it’s our 10-year anniversary, we should do something, get an ice-cream cone and you know, do something special and then I joked about getting married.”

Jeff Baena said they couldn’t get married so quickly. Plaza called him at 5:00 pm and asked him to come to her yard and marry her. Aubrey Plaza created a love altar in the yard and decorated it with snippets from their love life, stones, smoke, fire, etc.

Baena turned up at the venue with a Hawaiian shirt and a briefcase. The two got hitched at 8:30 pm wearing a tie and die dresses made by him.
