The Weeknd showed up at the 2025 Grammy's for a surprise performance. The singer performed Cry For Me from his new album Hurry Up Tomorrow and was joined by Playboi Carti on stage to perform their hit song Timeless which was originally released in October 2024.

The Weeknd's presence at The Grammy's came as a surprise after he vowed to not submit his music to the Music Awards event alleging a lack of transparency.

After news of the singer's surprise performance made waves online, netizens took to Chart Data's X post to express their disbelief and question the singer's words.

"I mean it's cool that the Weeknd got an appearance but given how Abel and the Grammys interacted four years ago this just leaves an extremely bad taste in my mouth." - a user expressed
"i wonder how much begging the grammy’s had to do 😭" - another user questioned
"Didn't he say he was boycotting the Grammys after they snubbed his album a few years ago?" - another user recalled
"What a sellout. Stood on NO ground at all. Yuck." - a user opinionated

Why did The Weeknd boycott The Grammys?

In March 2021, days before the 63rd annual Grammy Awards, The Weeknd in a statement to The New York Times claimed that he would no longer submit his music to the Award show because of "the secret committees."

"Because of the secret committees. I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys."

The artist was among a list of Black stars including Drake, Kanye West, and Frank Ocean who had publicly rebuked the Grammys. As a response the interim president of The Grammys, Harvey Mason Jr told The Times,

“We’re all disappointed when anyone is upset. But I will say that we are constantly evolving. And this year, as in past years, we are going to take a hard look at how to improve our awards process, including the nomination review committees.”

The Blinding Lights singer also told Variety in a statement at the time that he is "uninterested in being a part of the Grammys, especially with their admission of corruption for all these decades."

The artist noted that "trust has been broken for so long" between the Award organization and the artists and it's time for a "transparent system.

The Weeknd stayed on the ground with his vow of not being present at the Awards show for 4 years before his surprise performance in 2025.
