The buzz surrounding Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning has been high ever since Tom Cruise announced that the film would go on the floors along with Dead Reckoning Part One. Fast forward to February 2025; we got another glimpse of the movie during Super Bowl LIX.
Christopher McQuarrie is in the director's chair. He has been directing the franchise since Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation and this one's said to be among the highest-budget movies ever made.
Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning Super Bowl LIX teaser
Super Bowl LIX gave us a teaser for Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. Fans were treated to glimpses from the original trailer, with Ethan Hunt (Cruise) running at an impressive speed in a jungle, holding on to a plane, and more.
Other than that, we got to see glimpses of Thunderbolts* (no, we still don't know about the asterisk), Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, F1, M3GAN 2.0, Jurassic World Rebirth, and Smurfs.
Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is likely to be the final chapter in the long-running franchise concerning the main storyline. It picks up from where it left off in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning. In the movie, an artificial intelligence called the Entity is pulling the strings, and it needs to be taken down.
Such themes can be seen in other franchises like Terminator, but the plot mostly includes robots. Most recently, it was in Jack Quaid's Companion where we saw a robot dubbed Iris (Sophie Thatcher) somehow enhance her artificial intelligence levels to outshine humans trying to pull off a heinous crime.
The film also features a stunt sequence that is likely to take the viewers' breath away. Tom Cruise shared his filming experience in an interview with Empire magazine:
"When you stick your face out, going over 120 to 130 miles an hour, you’re not getting oxygen. So I had to train myself how to breathe. There were times I would pass out physically; I was unable to get back into the cockpit."
Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is slated to hit theaters on May 23, 2025. McQuarrie has told Fandango that they are developing ideas for the future, but perhaps they will only be spin-offs.
