While speaking to Vanity Fair in an article published on March 19, Samuel L. Jackson recalls some advice Bruce Willis gave him while they were shooting Die Hard With A Vengeance in 1994. The actor said,

"He told me, 'Hopefully you'll be able to find a character that, when you make bad movies and they don't make any money, you can always go back to this character everybody does."

Bruce then went on to give examples noting that while he has John McClane, Arnold Schwarzenegger got Terminator, and Sylvester has got Rocky and Rambo.

Jackson eventually ended up getting his fan-loved role, Nick Fury in the Marvel franchise, 14 years after hearing the advice,

"It didn't occur to me until I got that Nick Fury role - and I had a nine-picture deal to be Nick Fury - that, Oh, I'm doing what Bruce said. I've got this character now."

Samuel L. Jackson's character, Nick Fury, is a master spy who rises in the ranks of the United States Army in the Marvel movies. Jackson has played the role in 12 MCU films after first being introduced in 2008's Iron Man, reportedly making around $12.8 billion.

"I was never going to let the Oscars be a measure of my success or failure" - says Samuel L. Jackson

Samuel L. Jackson while speaking to Vanity Fair in a recently published interview, also revealed that Bruce Willis' advice changed his career in the films for the better.

While speaking to the Los Angeles Times in 2022, Samuel revealed that he stopped choosing roles with the sole focus on winning an award. He also added that despite playing Nick Fury so many times over, he has never lost interest in playing the character,

"Was never going to let the Oscars be a measure of my success or failure as an actor. My yardstick of success is my happiness: Am I satisfied with what I'm doing? I'm not doing statue-chasing movies. You know: 'If you do this movie, you'll win an Oscar.' No thanks. I'd rather be Nick Fury. Or having fun being Mace Windu with a lightsaber in my hand."

Bruce and Jackson have appeared in five films together including; National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1, Pulp Fiction, Die Hard with Vengeance, Unbreakable, and Glass. The actors were also slated to work in Black Water Transit before both opted out.
