Melania Trump has been making headlines for her dress code at Donald Trump's presidential inauguration, given that she wore a long black coat and a wool, boater-style hat that nearly covered her face. The Daily Show was simply one among many users to take to X to comment on her dress code.
In a tweet on X on January 20, 2025, here's what The Daily Show had to say at the expense of the First Lady of the United States:
"No one out-pizzas the Hut."
Experts weigh in on Melania Trump's choice of clothing: Here's what everyone is saying
Melania Trump's clothing was a statement in and of itself, as she opted to wear designs by Americans as her husband took the oath of office, a nod to the family's "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) sentiments.
Her ensemble was custom-designed by Adam Lippes, which featured a navy silk wool double-breasted coat that was taut at the waist. She paired her military-style outfit with bare legs and stiletto heels. Beneath her coat, she wore a silk wool pencil skirt and a cream silk crepe blouse. Lippes is known to also have dressed Biden and Michelle Obama.
“The tradition of the presidential inauguration embodies the beauty of American democracy and today we had the honor to dress our first lady, Mrs. Melania Trump,” Lippes said in a statement to CNN. “Mrs. Trump’s outfit was created by some of America’s finest craftsmen and I take great pride in showing such work to the world.”
As for her contentious hat, it was from New York-based milliner Eric Javits. “(With) her face half hidden by her hat, Melania remains aloof,” professor Nichola Gutgold, author of Electing Madam Vice President: When Women Run, Women Win, said in an email to the outlet.
“As the public persona emerged, she still craved privacy,” Kate Bennett, a former CNN White House correspondent, said ahead of the inauguration. “Her clothes, in my opinion, really reflected that. … Her silhouettes became long-sleeved, cinched waists, hard shoulders, longer hemline, like almost a military-esque vibe. I think that’s because it felt like armor … Because she underwent four years of really intense scrutiny.”
Vanessa Friedman, the New York Times's chief fashion critic, described the mystery that Melania Trump's entire ensemble gave. She added that the look was unusual for the first family, especially on inauguration day when the first family is "put on view as the new face of the nation.”
Melania Trump's ensemble has been creating a ruckus on social media, with a wave of memes erupting to poke fun at her.
