Theo James starrer The Monkey is nearing its theatrical release, and the eerie horror film now has another poster, reiterating the horrors the film promises to unravel as it haunts its viewers with a monkey toy.

The new poster features a phrase, or maybe a dialogue, that says,

"The monkey that likes killing our family...it's back."

Adapted from Stephen King's iconic 1980s story, The Monkey will focus on twin brothers who are exposed to a childhood toy that brought them dread as children and the return of which can only mean horrifying things for their adulthood.

Directed by Osgood Perkins, the film's unsettling trailer has already set the mood for the film's release and its protagonist- a monkey toy with a drum and a sinister look on his face. The movie is set to hit theaters on February 21, 2025.

This isn't the first time Perkins is adapting a Stephen King film. In 2024, the director helmed the adaptation of King's Longlegs, which has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 86%.

Led by Theo James, who rose to fame after The White Lotus, the film also features Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, and Colin O'Brien. James will be acting as twins in the film, a first for the actor, and fans have hopeful expectations from his performance.

What is The Monkey about?

The Monkey is one of Stephen King's most loved, acclaimed stories, and one of the eeriest. King has been a significant backbone for horror films worldwide, being the mastermind behind horror masterpieces like It, The Shining, and Gerald's Game.

Based on the success of his other adaptations, fans are hoping this one would also be just as good and would hold the horror of the original short story

The Monkey is about a toy that twins Hal and Bill found in their childhood, something that belonged to their father. Although a harmless toy, their perception of it is soon changed as horrible things start happening around them, and the toy is found to be the only common factor between all the incidents.

As kids, they get rid of the toy and get on with their lives with the misconception that whatever was inside the toy has left them for good. Their fears are brought back when the same incidents start happening in their adulthood and they go on a quest to retrieve the toy, to stop the gruesome incidents from happening again.

Knowing Perkins' keen eye for horror elements and his mastery when it comes to the genre, The Monkey is likely to be an uncomfortable watch. Talking about the film, Elijah Wood praised Perkins and his brilliance in an interview with Collider and said,

"Listen, Oz has been quietly ticking away and making extraordinary genre films for years, and I've long wondered when he was gonna have his moment. It's just thrilling that he finally is, and he deserves it. He's an extraordinary atmosphere master, an incredible filmmaker, and a great writer. This is an exciting time.”

The Monkey will be released on February 21, 2023.
