Netflix continues to work on the Cujo adaptation, and the studio is eyeing Darren Aronofsky to direct it. The project will draw inspiration from Stephen King's horror novel, which already has an adaptation that came out in 1983.
Aronofsky is well known for exploring films with unusual elements, as he has established himself as one of the best directors in the genre of psychological thrillers. His filmography notably includes Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, The Wrestler, Black Swan, Mother! and Caught Stealing. His work on Black Swan received considerable success as the Natalie Portman film continues to be one of the most beloved psychological thrillers. The film received five Oscar nominations, including one for Aronofsky's direction.
The Cujo project is being produced by Roy Lee, who has previously produced It and its sequel, It Chapter Two, and the horror film Salem's Lot.
What is Cujo about?
Stephen King's classic novel revolves around the quaint town of Castle Rock, where Cujo, a lovable and harmless St. Bernard, chases a rabbit into a cave and gets bitten by an infected bat. The virus gradually takes hold, and things worsen for the plot. The story features the Trenton family—advertising executive Vic, his wife Donna, and their young son Tad—who struggle with a broken marriage after Vic discovers Donna's infidelity.
As Cujo's illness progresses, Joe Camber, a gruff but able mechanic, becomes a victim of Cujo's attacks. When his wife, Charity, and son, Brett, go away for a visit with relatives, Cujo stays behind. Within a short time, his rabies-fueled rage becomes lethal, causing a series of brutal attacks.
Donna and Tad visit the isolated Camber estate for auto repairs, but their car breaks down, leaving them stranded. They quickly discover something is terribly wrong when Cujo, now a horrifying shadow of his former self, attacks them. With no escape and the scorching summer sun turning the environment into an oven, mother and son find themselves in a desperate fight for survival against a once-beloved family pet that has transformed into a vicious killer.
The film and the novel are among King's most beloved works. Lewis Teague directed the 1983 film, and the script was written by Don Carlos Dunaway and Barbara Turner.
Stephen King has become one of the major inspirations for horror films in recent years, with multiple movies exploring the author's creative and cunning works. This year alone has seen three movies based on King's work: Osgood Perkins' The Monkey, which was released recently; Mike Flanagan's The Life of Chuck, set to release in June; and Edgar Wright's The Running Man, starring Glen Powell.
More details on Cujo are awaited for now.
