Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber play spouses on The Perfect Couple. The actress reportedly checked in with Naomi Watts before accepting the role as the latter is Schreiber’s ex-wife. The two were together for more than a decade before they split in 2016. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight on September 6, 2024, Liev Schreiber told Nicole Kidman:
“I heard a story that you asked Naomi first if it was okay.”
Kidman responded by saying "Of course", to which Schreiber replied, "That’s how close they are". Naomi Watts also confirmed the news during an interaction with Entertainment Tonight at the Toronto International Film Festival during a promotion of The Friend:
“We always check in, we're besties. That was very kind of her to do that.”
Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman’s friendship has spanned more than 30 years. While presenting Kidman with the AFI Life Achievement Award in April 2024, Watts recalled that the two first met in the 1980s during an audition for a swimsuit commercial.
She also mentioned that she hadn’t watched her best friend’s new show but was eager to binge it. Expressing her excitement she noted how everyone had been raving about it since its release.
Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber started dating in 2005 after meeting at the Met Gala. Although they parted ways in 2016, they have remained on good terms while co-parenting their two children, Sasha, 17, and Kai, 15.
Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts share a sisterly bond
Originally from North Shore in Sydney, the two best friends first met when they were fifteen years old. While recalling the 1980s swimsuit audition, Naomi Watts said none of them got the role. It was already dark by the time they exited the venue and Watts had missed the last bus. She said:
“But Nic offered to spring for a taxi and she said she would drop me on the way home even though it was 20 minutes out of her way and it was an extra $15 on the meter.”
She further added that Nicole Kidman had always been generous to her as she made Watts feel like a part of her family. Kidman was like the sister she never had.
“Her dad, a psychologist. She shared him with me in times of need. He counseled me and her mom, a staunch feminist, always with a ciggy in her mouth, who tells it like it is and taught me that Bananagrams was the best thing ever, right?” Naomi Watts recalled.
Netflix's The Perfect Couple is based on Elin Hilderbrand's popular novel of the same name. Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber portray the affluent couple Greer and Tag Winbury.
The mystery series follows the Winbury family as they gather in Nantucket for the wedding of their son Benji (Billy Howle) and his fiancée Amelia (Eve Hewson). However, the celebration takes a dark turn when a member of the wedding party is found dead on the morning of the ceremony, making everyone a suspect.
