Mufasa: The Lion King took one box office leave on Christmas, roaring its way to the top while adding $14.7 million to its tally on the auspicious day. This brings the weekend tally to $64.3 million in the United States, surpassing Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Nosferatu at the time of writing.
As per Box Office Mojo, Nosferatu garnered $11.5 million, while Sonic the Hedgehog's collection remained at $10.3 million. It was followed by A Complete Unknown at $7.2 million and Wicked at $5.3 million. There are still a couple of days to go until the week ends, which allows the films to further compete their way to the top.
Mufasa: The Lion King appears to have dominated the week already
Sonic the Hedgehog opened the week as the winner, with numbers almost double in contrast to Mufasa: The Lion King. However, the numbers for both films kept deteriorating until Christmas, when the latter took the lead after being a runner-up for five straight days.
The musical drama film was released in the U.S. on December 20, 2024, amassing $133.4 million internationally and $76.3 million domestically, making over $200 million as of now.
On the other hand, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which was released on the same day, is still to level the water with the production budget, as it currently stands at $98.9 million. It seems like the film has failed to lay down an international appeal, as the global numbers stand at $11k only.
It is especially surprising because the prequels have performed well, with part one collecting $156.4 million globally while part two swiping in $214 million. What's more shocking is that the latest sequel in the Sonic series has received better ratings than the other two.
Nosferatu was released later, but compared to Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3's release day performances, it fell short, slightly by the former, widely by the latter. In the upcoming weekend, all of them will be realigned for the box office race again.
Critically, Nosferatu and Sonic the Hedghog 3 are two close contenders, while Mufasa: The Lion King is way behind in the scores currently. However, it could be the nostalgia hitting the audience and pushing it to the lead.
