Ever since the news of James Gunn's revamped DC Universe, there have been speculations over whether Robert Pattinson as the titular caped crusader in Matt Reeves' 2022 release, The Batman, would feature in the rebooted universe. Filmmaker Reeves has now opened up about the possibilities.

Pattinson shot to fame in the Twilight films, and he won legions of new fans playing the iconic vigilante Batman, who are now excited for a second installment. Interestingly, James Gunn had previously discussed the potential of Pattinson's Batman joining the shared universe, but then it seemed unlikely due to Reeves' initial reluctance to merge the franchises.

However, in an interview with Josh Horowitz, The Batman director has now shed light on the possibility, saying:

"It really comes down to whether or not it makes sense. I think what’s been great is it was really a kind of story I wanted to tell — we’re calling it The Epic Crime Saga and all of that."

Reeves explained that the ultimate decision would be determined by the direction of both: The Batman franchise and the broader DC Universe. Currently, the filmmaker's primary goal is to complete the script for the upcoming second installment of The Batman.

Read on to explore what else Reeves shared during the interview.

The Batman director Matt Reeves comments on Robert Pattinson's DCU future

James Gunn previously revealed that DC's upcoming The Brave and the Bold would introduce fans to a new Batman, hinting that Robert Pattinson won't make his way from Elseworlds to the revamped DCU. Gunn's film is expected to shift the focus from the young Batman that Pattinson portrayed in the 2022 film.

However, Reeves' comments in the recent interview leave open the possibility that Pattinson’s version of Batman could indeed be a part of the DCU. This will likely be possible when two conditions are met: It should make sense for both franchises and Reeves' vision for the project must be highlighted.

The filmmaker said:

"What the future brings, I can’t really tell you. I have no idea right now, except that my head is down now about getting The Batman — Part II shooting and to make it something really special, which, of course, is the most important thing."

While Reeves didn't give a definite answer, his comments leave room for flexibility in the future. Since Gunn's The Brave and the Bold is also expected to bring a fresh narrative and characters like Damian Wayne, the biological son of Bruce Wayne, and Talia al Ghul, it is hard to predict how Pattinson's version would fit into the picture.

However, if creative minds like Matt Reeves and James Gunn get together, DC enthusiasts can expect something unique.
