After the massive success of 2019's Avengers: Endgame, Marvel is all set to put out the fourth Avengers film in 2027, titled Avengers: Secret Wars which will bring in newer characters to the Avengers world after the events of Endgame. Although information on the project is limited for now, many have speculated on what changes the film will bring to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While many made guesses on who will be a part of Avengers: Secret Wars, some theorized that the MCU might reset after the film and start all over again. Putting these theories to rest, Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum talked about it in an interview with ScreenOffScript for Daredevil: Born Again and said,
“You’re gonna have to ask Kevin [Feige] about the features. I’m on the TV side, but we do navigate the same waters and live in the same universe, I’m a comic fan. I’ve seen what happens at comic companies when things get full reboots and the truth is every time there’s been a full reboot in DC, you know, in DC in particular. It always feels like you can’t really fully reboot anything. The classics always come back around. It’s a very difficult thing to do to a living, breathing fictional universe to just start from scratch because of all the fan investment and love for the stories that have come so far.”
Many fans have predicted that Avengers: Secret Wars is the ideal chance for Marvel to relaunch and reboot the Avengers and perhaps put the X-Men in focus. However, the reboot that was discussed among fans was never a full reboot, but rather a shift in focus as the storyline includes multiversal elements. Many have also speculated whether the Cold War will alter the state of the Avengers and reboot the team. Currently, there are no such confirming details for the same.
Winderbum's statement does stand true in terms of a full reboot never being ideal for a fictional universe as it loses access to several characters that fans are likely attached to. DCEU's soft reboot of James Gunn's DCU has already faced certain criticisms as the studio put certain beloved characters such as Wonder Woman on hold to focus on other projects. As for Marvel, it remains to have some of the most loved fictional characters in superhero history and a reboot might wipe away a lot of fan favorites.
What is Avengers: Secret Wars about?
The Secret Wars narrative in the comics features the multiversal collapse, which could allow Marvel Studios to deliberately reset or refresh characters while keeping former fan-favorite characteristics.
The development of Battleworld, which is described as "a patchwork planet composed of different realities that exist simultaneously, governed by a single ruler," is a crucial component of this. This may introduce mutants in a natural way by fusing a new X-Men universe with the MCU.
Chronologically, the film comes after Avengers: Doomsday
Talking about the films, the Russo brothers said in a statement,
"Being able to create stories and explore characters within the Marvel Universe fulfilled a life-long dream of ours, and we discovered a powerful connection with audiences in each film that we made. We’re thrilled to collaborate once again with Kevin, Lou and the entire Marvel team to bring this epic adventure in storytelling to new and surprising places for both the fans and ourselves."
Avengers: Doomsday is set to come out on May 1, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars will hit theaters on May 7, 2027. Both the films are expected to start shooting soon, with Doomsday being shot this April in the UK.
