George Clooney is over the past!
According to an article by People Magazine, Clooney appeared in an episode of 60 Minutes on March 23, Sunday. The actor was on the show to speak about his recent play titled Good Night and Good Luck, a stage adaptation based on his 2005 movie of the same name. It also marks his Broadway debut.
During the interview, Clooney mentioned that he will not do romantic films anymore. The actor said that he is 63 years old and doesn't want to compete with twenty-five-year-olds.
"Look, I'm 63 years old. I'm not trying to compete with 25-year-old leading men," said the two-time Oscar winner. "That's not my job. I'm not doing romantic films anymore."
The last romantic comedy done by George Clooney was Ticket to Paradise, which was released in 2022 with Julia Roberts. The film earned a total of $168 million at the global box office.
While Clooney has gained praise for his dramatic roles such as The Descendants, Out of Sight, and Gravity, he has also played leads in blockbuster rom-coms such as Ticket to Paradise and One Fine Day, among others.
The play Good Night and Good Luck, like the movie, narrates the real-life account of CBS news journalist Edward R. Murrow's exposé on Senator Joseph McCarthy. The play starts its performances on March 12 and officially opens on April 3.
In the movie, Clooney played the role of producer Fred Friendly. On stage, he plays the role of Murrow. The role, originally played by David Strathairn, also received an Oscar nomination. The film was co-written by Clooney and Grant Heslov (both the movie and stage production). It includes talented names such as Mac Brandt, Glenn Feshler, Christopher Denham, Clark Gregg, Ilana Glazer, Will Dagger, and more.
During the interview with 60 Minutes, Clooney was asked about being in close proximity to the audience. He replied amicably that he is looking back at his wife.
"I'm not looking at them. I'm putting my wife (Amal Clooney) in the very, very, very back."
According to People Magazine, when asked whether he wished he had done Broadway earlier, the actor replied that he might not have been ready.
"I don't know that I could've," Clooney said. "I didn't do the work required to get there. Anybody who would deny that would just be a liar. There isn't a single actor alive that wouldn't have loved to be here in Broadway."
60 Minutes also mentioned that "Clooney was in his sexiest man phase" in the early 2000s, which marked some of his greatest films. He acknowledged that his romance movies contributed to his success, but mentioned that he has no plans of returning to the genre. Roberts mentioned to The New York Times that he had declined almost 20 romance roles in his lifetime.
“People sometimes misconstrue the amount of time that’s gone by that I haven’t done a romantic comedy as my not wanting to do one.If I had read something that I thought was that ‘Notting Hill’ level of writing or ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ level of madcap fun, I would do it. They didn’t exist until this movie that I just did that Ol Parker wrote and directed.” Clooney told the publication.
Clooney concluded by saying that there isn't a single actor alive who does not want to be on Broadway.
