Ex-US President Joe Biden on January 10 slammed Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg over his step to end its fact-checking program and replace them with user-generated community notes. Joe called the movie "really shameful" while he answered questions from reporters during his appearance in the Roosevelt Room.
"It's just completely contrary to everything America is about. We want to tell the truth. We haven't always done it as a nation. Telling the truth matters."
His comments come after Zuckerberg announced on January 7 that Meta was ending its fact-checking program to replace it with a model similar to 'Community Notes' on X (formerly Twitter).
After Joe's comments on Zuckerberg's move went viral on the internet, netizens took to criticize Joe, allegedly calling him a "liar" for allegedly coercing social media channels to censor content against the COVID-19 vaccine during the pandemic.
"The Truth The covid lies will never be forgiven or forgotten and this administration bullied the social media networks to push Pharma lies. You continue to be the mouthpiece for criminals." - a user mentioned.
"These presidential comments brought to you by the present whose administration intimidated and coerced a social media company to suppress speech." - another user mentioned.
"“Tellin’ the truth matters.” Without a hint of irony." - another user commented.
"It’s rich to see Joe Biden criticizing ANYONE for lying. He’s made a full career of lies —- many of which are fully documented." - another user pointed out.
"I think it is really shameful" - says Joe Biden about Mark Zuckerberg's move to remove Meta's fact-checking program
While criticizing Meta's decision to remove their fact-checking program, Joe Biden, in an answer to reporters after his speech on the US economy in the Roosevelt Room on January 10, said,
"The idea that, you know, a billionaire can buy something and say, 'By the way, we are not gonna fact check anything,' and you know, you have millions of people reading, going online, reading this stuff...I think it's really shameful."
However, during an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Zuckerberg alleged that the Biden administration coerced social media channels to censor certain content related to the COVID-19 vaccine during the pandemic.
"This hit the most extreme. I'd say it was during the Biden administration when they were trying to roll out the vaccine program. Now I'm generally pretty pro rolling out vaccines, I think on balance the vaccines are more positive than negative but I think that while they're trying to push that program, they also tried to censor anyone who was arguing against it."
Zuckerberg continued to add that the Biden administration pushed them "super hard to take down things that were honestly true" and asked them to take down anything that reported on vaccines having side effects." Zuckerberg also noted that at the time, Meta said they won't be following through.
