Cillian Murphy has won millions of hearts, from Batman Begins (2005) to Peaky Blinders (2013 to 2022), and then the actor did that with Oppenheimer (2023) too. Then it was time for him to go on the stage to receive awards for the efforts he had poured into his characters.
One of these famous speeches came during the Oscars 2024, where the actor received, the Academy Award for Best Actor. While he did mention everyone who supported him while he was filming, he didn't forget the real heroes to whom he dedicated the award. Tensions were clearly high when Brendan Fraser presented the nominees for the Oscars 2024:
"You know we made a film about the man who created the Atomic Bomb, and for better or for worse, we're all living in Oppenheimer's world. So, I would like to dedicate this too the peacemakers everywhere," Murphy said in his acceptance speech.
When Oppehheimer's cast became Oppen-homies
On the table, the names were Jeffrey Wright for American Fiction, Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers, Bradley Cooper for Maestro, Colman Domingo for Rustin, and Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer. All of them were just fantastic in their own right but the best got what he deserved.
Though Murphy wasn't the only one winning his first Oscar, Robert Downey Jr. bagged one for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in the film, and Christopher Nolan, after being nominated six times, swiped a couple of them, including the Best Picture and the Best Director.
Other than that, the film won several Golden Globe Awards too, where we again saw Murphy getting on the stage and delivering a heartfelt speech. There was lipstick on his nose and he didn't bother to clean it as he was so happy. He again won an award, this time it was the Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama. His BAFTA speech was fun to hear too, especially when he went from a Peaky Blinders leader to a San Andreas-like homie, saying:
"I want to thank my fellow nominees, and my 'Oppen-homies.'"
Oppenheimer was the sixth time the actor worked with the director, with other movies being Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Inception (2010), and Dunkirk (2017). Nolan is coming up with The Odyssey next but Murphy isn't likely to appear in this one.
