Adam Devine recently shared an awkward yet hilarious run-in with comedian Danny McBride that made him leave a Hollywood party. Devine told the story in an interview on In Depth With Graham Bensinger, where the actor shared various stories from his acting career, including this particularly cringeworthy one.
The alleged incident happened at an afterparty for the 2014 comedy Neighbors, in which Devine appeared alongside star Seth Rogen. Devine described trying to match Rogen’s legendary weed-smoking stamina, only to have it backfire.
"I'm trying to go toe-to-toe with Seth smoking w**d, and I can smoke w**d, but I can't smoke weed like Seth Rogen," he said.
Meeting McBride was a major moment for Devine, who counts him among his comedy heroes. According to Entertainment Weekly, He’s a particular fan of Danny McBride's projects such as Eastbound & Down and The Foot Fist Way. Adam Devine recalled his interaction with McBride, saying:
"And then, through the the smoke emerges the legend that is Danny McBride... I don't know why I thought this was a cool thing to say to him or even a thing to say to anyone, but I go, 'You're a bright shooting star.'"
Realizing how awkward his comment must have sounded, Adam Devine felt an immediate urge to leave the party.
"I grabbed my girlfriend at the time, and I was like, 'We have to leave.' And she's, like, 'Why? I'm having fun.' And I go, 'I just called Danny McBride a bright shooting star, and she's like, 'You're right, let's go. Let's get out of here.'"
Years later, McBride cast Devine to play his brother in the hit HBO show The Righteous Gemstones. Devine said he was shocked to take on the role, assuming the party incident had killed any opportunity to collaborate. But supposedly, McBride hardly remembered the meeting.
