Lil Wayne, a Grammy-winning rapper and one of hip-hop’s most influential figures, believes he was snubbed from headlining the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show in his hometown of New Orleans. As a result, he has announced that he won’t be attending the big game.
The artist took to Instagram on Tuesday, February 4, to upload a video confirming that he will be absent from the game, where Kendrick Lamar is scheduled to perform with SZA and other guest appearances.
Back when it was announced that Kendrick would be headlining the game, voices of dissent began growing louder, with some calling for Lil Wayne—who was born and raised in New Orleans and is deeply tied to its music scene—to be chosen instead.
Despite some initial support for Wayne, the general response to his announcement has been less sympathetic, with many feeling that he’s making too much of the situation.
Nonetheless, fans have since begun reacting to Wayne's latest news with a mix of ridicule, jests, and quippy remarks, with some users even suggesting that the artist may have taken this thing way too far. Check out what this one user said, for instance:
"Omg Wayne LET IT GOOOOOOOO😭."
The comments didn't end there, as users online were visibly teeming with opinions:
"He's still talking about this...?" one user probed.
"We don’t care, it’s black history month and a black man is representing 👏👏👏," another stated.
"I love Wayne , but like we don’t care," someone else echoed.
Even more joined the discourse:
"I hope Kendrick Lamar and SZA's performance be the most viewed nfl half-time show ever.✊🏽🙌🏽👏🏼," one user hoped.
"Shiidd me either😂," another joked.
"No one was checking to see if you were gonna be there in the first place 😂," someone else stated.
"He need to be worried about his dreads falling off the bone like a Sunday pot roast," someone joked.
"Parents, teach your children to celebrate others’ achievements. Life won’t always go our way, but we can choose to be happy for others’ success! 🤷🏽♀️" another suggested.
Scores online felt like Lil Wayne was being a hater for no reason, and that he should be over it by now.
