Kristen Stewart is all set to take the director's chair for her directorial debut, The Chronology Of Water, and as the actress reveals more and more details about the film, it sounds all the more exciting. The film will follow Lidia Yuknavitch's memoir, which gained worldwide acclaim in 2011 for its raw portrayal of addiction, sexuality, and self-discovery.
Stewart took up the project in 2022, marking her first project as a director, and she has time and again spoken up about her passion for the project that will bring Yuknavitch's memoir to life.
The film will star Imogen Poots in the lead role and was filmed in Latvia and Malta in 2022. Talking about what to expect from The Chronology Of Water, Stewart spoke to Porter in December 2024 and said:
"My movie is about incest and periods and a woman violently repossessing her voice and body, and it is, at times, hard to watch ... but it’s gonna be a f***ing thrill ride. I think that’s commercial, but I don’t think that I have any gauge on what that means. I think people would want to see that, but then… I think maybe people wanna watch movies about, like, Jesus and dogs."
The film will be a nuanced exploration of everything Yuknavitch went through as she detailed her life in her memoir. Needless to say, it's a project very close to Stewart's heart as she works behind the director's lens to bring justice to it.
Kristen Stewart reveals more details about The Chronology Of Water
Kristen described the film to Collider in a recently released interview on January 27, 2025, as an "arthouse" piece. She talked about how it's a suitable film for festivals as she hopes it gets accepted and welcomed at prestigious festivals in its year of release. She updated the progress on the film and said that it's still rolling and is being finished as she speaks.
Calling it ephemeral and adding that it closely resembles a memory, she talked about how wonderful it was working with the cast. She also praised lead actress Poots and said:
"Imogen Poots is better– when I say “better,” she's more alive than I have seen anyone be alive in a movie. If I was ever going to make a movie as an actor who just loves actors, loves performance, loves watching people do unexpected things… I've just never had that experience. I've never been around it. She's so incredible. She's like family to me now."
It has not yet been revealed when The Chronology Of Water will be released, but seeing as Stewart confirmed that it's getting finished soon, we might have a release date soon.
