Though critics aren't quite mesmerized with the film, audiences do appear to be given a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes' popcorn meter. Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 was added to Netflix just before we entered the new year, which is now proving fruitful.
The latest numbers show that it made only $38 million against the $50 million budget that went into the first film. All in all, Kevin Costner has allegedly poured in $100 million for his entire project for which he left his role of John Dutton in Yellowstone.
Although the production began recently, Kevin Costner discovered the idea in 1988 and tried to pitch it to The Walt Disney Company but the project was buried due to budgetary differences. There will be four films in the saga, out of which two are ready to go; the second is yet to get a global release.
Horizon: An American Saga revolves around the Wild West and is set against the backdrop of the American Civil War between the Union and the Confederacy. Other than Kevin Costner, the franchise stars Avatar's Sam Worthington, Sneaky Pete's Giovanni Ribisi, Legally Blonde's Luke Wilson, and more.
The film was released digitally in July 2024 after its initial poor performance and later on HBO Max in August 2024. As Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 is still making its way to the top, it will have to compete with other trending movies, including Taron Egerton's Carry-On, Liam Neeson's Blacklight, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and more.
