Pop music sensation Katy Perry was one of six women who traveled to space aboard Blue Origin's NS-31 suborbital flight on Monday, April 14. Since the crew’s safe return from the 11-minute spacefaring journey aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard, their trip and ensuing histrionics have resulted in intense backlash from social media users, celebrities, and environmentalists, who have questioned the relevance and meaning behind the recent voyage, especially given who was on board.
It is now being reported that the singer has some regrets. A source close to Katy shared with The Daily Mail that, while
"Katy doesn't regret going to space. It was life-changing. What she does regret is making a public spectacle out of it.”
Katy Perry’s Blue Origin debacle
In speaking with The Daily Mail, the same source claimed that Perry regrets "kissing the ground" after landing and her "close-up camera moments" inside the capsule. It is relevant to note that Perry has yet to speak publicly on the topic.
The all-female crew aboard the shuttle included Lauren Sanchez, Gayle King, former NASA scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and Kerianne Flynn.
The response to Perry’s role as an ambassador for Blue Origin has stirred controversy, with several celebrities mocking Perry’s role in the debacle. Emily Ratajkowski claimed the space trip was "beyond parody" via TikTok, fiercely criticizing the women aboard. Emily said,
“Saying that you care about Mother Earth and it’s about Mother Earth, and you’re going up in a spaceship that is built and paid for by a company that’s singlehandedly destroying the planet”
Actress and director Olivia Wilde made her feelings known via Instagram Stories. In a shot intended for Perry, she posted a picture of the singer kissing the ground upon returning safely and wrote,
"Billion dollars bought some good memes I guess."
Singer Lily Allen called the whole thing “so out of touch”.
Fast-food corporation Wendy's even managed to get a shot in.
According to Gayle King, who was also a passenger on the flight,
“Katy sang ‘What a Wonderful World’, cause we’ve been asking her to sing all the time and she wouldn’t. Everyone said sing ‘Roar,’ sing “Firework,’ and she said, ‘It’s not about me. I wanted to talk about the world.’ Isn’t that nice?”
In response to the heaps of backlash, King added,
“Please don’t call it a ‘ride’. We duplicated the same trajectory that Alan Shepard did back in the day, pretty much. No one called that a ‘ride’. It was called a flight, it was called a journey. There was nothing frivolous about what we did. (We’re) doing (this) to inspire other women and young girls, please don’t ignore that.”
As the situation continues to unfold, the masses have made their feelings known as they await Perry’s response.
