Karla Sofía Gascón's alleged past tweet about Selena Gomez explored amid recent controversy

A past tweet by Emilia Perez actor Karla Sofía Gascón has resurfaced on the internet, where she allegedly insults her co-star Selena Gomez. Karla has been under fire recently after journalist Sarah Hagi discovered a comment she made about Muslim immigration in Spain on X in November 2020. In a tweet translated from Spanish, Karla says

"I'm sorry. Is it just my impression or is there more muslims in Spain? Everytime I go to pick up my daughter from school there are more women with their hair covered and their skirts down to their heels. Next year instead of English we'll have to teach Arabic."

She also made comments about co-star Selena Gomez in October 2022 while responding to a Spanish tweet about Gomez and Hailey, Bieber saying,

"She's a rich rat who plays the poor bstard whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his ex-wife."

After receiving backlash from people all over the world days before the Oscars, Karla, in a statement obtained by Variety, apologized for her allegedly Islamophobic remarks saying,

"As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all of well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness."

Emilia Perez actor Zoe Saldana in a Q&A in London, reacted to Karla Sofía Gascón's bigoted tweets saying that it "saddens" her.

"It makes me really sad because I don't support (it), and I don't have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group. I can only attest to the experience that I had with each and every individual that was a part, that is part of this film, and my experience and my interactions with them was about inclusivity and collaboration and racial, cultural and gender equality. And it just saddens me."

Saldana added that it "saddens" her that the Emilia Perez team has to face "this setback right now." The critically-acclaimed film is leading the 2025 Oscar nominations with 13 nominations with Karla Sofía Gascón winning a nomination for the Best Actress Award.

Netflix and Selena Gomez are yet to comment on the recent controversies involving Karla Sofía Gascón. As per Variety spokespeople for Gascón have not responded to requests for comment either.
