The highly anticipated Karate Kid: Legends just got a new teaser. The martial arts drama, a sequel to the 2010 film, has fans even more excited about its premise.
Bringing back Jackie Chan as his iconic on-screen alter ego, Mr. Han, and Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso, Karate Kid: Legends will focus on the duo teaching martial arts to a new student, played by Ben Wang.
Karate Kid: Legends is directed by Jonathon Entwistle and written by Rob Lieber. The plot of the film will revolve around Wang's character as he moves to New York from Beijing, and instances of bullying lead him to Han and Russo, who train him in martial arts, much like the 2010 remake of the 1986 film. The Karate Kid has since seen several remakes and reboots, and this one will be the sixth film in the franchise.
The plot synopsis of the film says,
"After a family tragedy, kung fu prodigy Li Fong is uprooted from his home in Beijing and forced to move to New York City with his mother. Li struggles to let go of his past as he tries to fit in with his new classmates, and although he doesn't want to fight, trouble seems to find him everywhere."
The plot description continues,
"When a new friend needs his help, Li enters a karate competition — but his skills alone aren't enough. Li's kung fu teacher Mr. Han enlists original Karate Kid Daniel LaRusso for help, and Li learns a new way to fight, merging their two styles into one for the ultimate martial arts showdown."
More about Karate Kid: Legends
Ben Wang will be the highlight of the movie, and the actor has talked about how special it is to work alongside Jackie Chan, who he describes as the first memory of knowing what an actor is. Wang stood out in the auditions among a thousand other entries and caught the eye of the filmmakers for his martial arts abilities. He has previously starred in American Born Chinese and 2024's Mean Girls.
Jackie Chan's comeback has also excited fans. According to Entwistle, the actor contributed many ideas to the film that turned out to be stellar creative aspects. Speaking to EW, he said,
“He was like the magical Dumbledore to us on set, and he's like that in the movie too. He was always looking for an opportunity to either roll on the floor, roll over a table, jump off a staircase — he would just be like, ‘I will do this.’ None of us ever had a choice. It was like, Jackie would have an idea, and we just filmed it because it's Jackie, and it would always be awesome.”
Fans are also hoping that Dre Parker, played by Jaden Smith, makes an appearance in the film, but so far, the studio has made no such announcement, and Smith's name isn't on any cast list.
Karate Kid: Legends is all set to release on 30 May 2025.
