Ryan Reynolds has asked a court to throw out Justin Baldoni’s lawsuit against him, arguing that Baldoni cannot sue just because his feelings were hurt.
The lawsuit accuses Reynolds of mocking and bullying Baldoni by creating the character "Nicepool" in Deadpool & Wolverine. According to Baldoni, the character was designed to make fun of his "woke feminist" image.
Reynolds' lawyers admitted that Nicepool was inspired by Baldoni but dismissed the lawsuit, saying Baldoni was overreacting. They called his response “thin-skinned outrage.”
Baldoni’s legal team responded with their statement:
“Mr. Reynolds’ exploitation of his enormous power in Hollywood continues, this time arrogantly asking to be dismissed from the case despite his publicly documented involvement extending far beyond just being a ‘supportive spouse.’”
What happened between Baldoni and Reynolds?
Baldoni directed It Ends With Us, a film in which he co-starred with Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively. After the movie’s success last summer, Lively accused Baldoni of se*ually harassing her on set and trying to spread negative rumors about her using his publicists.
On Tuesday, Reynolds filed a motion asking to be removed from Baldoni’s $400 million defamation lawsuit, which was sparked by Lively’s allegations.
In his statement, Reynolds described himself as a
"supportive spouse who has witnessed firsthand the emotional, reputational, and financial devastation"
Lively suffered.
His lawyers, Gottlieb and Hudson, argued:
“The entirety of Mr. Baldoni’s case appears to be based on Mr. Reynolds allegedly privately calling Mr. Baldoni a ‘predator,’ but here’s the problem — that is not defamation unless they can show that Mr. Reynolds did not believe that statement to be true.”
“The complaint doesn’t allege that,” they continued. “In fact, it suggests the opposite: That Mr. Reynolds genuinely believes Mr. Baldoni is a predator.”
They further argued that:
“The claims filed against Mr. Reynolds are simply a list of grievances attempting to shame him for being the man Mr. Baldoni has built his brand pretending to be — a man who is ‘confident enough to listen’ to the woman in his life.”
The legal battle between Reynolds and Baldoni is ongoing.
