Record producer DJ Mustard appears to be having fun after his invocation on Kendrick Lamar’s tv off. Lamar’s ‘MUSTARD’ scream in the song has taken the internet by storm and the record producer is fixated on it.
On November 27, 2024, he shared an interesting post on X saying that he yelled his name while walking down the street, suggesting that he was quite fixated on the trend. He wrote,
“I just walked down the street and yelled my own name i forgot i was me.”
Netizens added their reactions and comments to the post. One X user wrote,
“Just wait til it’s 70,000 people screaming it in the arena, you legend.”
X users pointed out that this part of the song aroused strong emotions, while others said that the record producer might suffer from 'main character syndrome.'
“This line is passing a message. This part in the song gives me goosebumps,” a social media user wrote.
“You can expect this to happen to you for a while now. Genius meme moment on a great album,” a netizen remarked.
“Main character syndrome so strong, even YOU forgot you're the lead,” a person commented on X.
Other social media users shared similar sentiments as fans on X remarked that his action was more of a power move.
“Pure main-character energy meets existential crisis. Yelling your own name on the street feels like the ultimate power move —like reminding the world (and yourself) exactly who you are,” an online user pointed out.
“In New Orleans with the etiquette of LA,” another internet user pointed out.
“Main character moment or an identity crisis? Either way, iconic,” a netizen reacted.
DJ Mustard felt honored to be a part of Kendrick Lamar’s new album
Mustard expressed his excitement to Billboard on November 22, 2024, about being featured on Kendrick Lamar's new album, calling it an elite moment and praising Lamar's ability to blend diverse rap styles seamlessly. He found the track quite thrilling and also called Lamar one of the greatest rappers of all time. He said,
“You know what’s crazy? It was a surprise for me, just like it was a surprise for everybody else. I had been thinking maybe it’s going to come at the top of the year, maybe it’s going to come around the Super Bowl or whatever.”
Mustard revealed that tv off was created in two parts from separate beats, with the first half developed during the same period as Not Like Us and the second one originating from a theatrical album project he was working on. After sending it to Kendrick Lamar, the rapper praised the track.
The record producer highlighted the energetic transition where Lamar enthusiastically shouts his name, calling it a standout moment, and was looking forward to fans' reactions during live performances.
Mustard's admiration reflects the broader support Kendrick Lamar has received from the hip-hop community since GNX dropped.
