A brief and visibly awkward exchange at UFC 314 in Miami has sparked waves online after former President Donald Trump seemed to snub actress Cheryl Hines, who is married to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Recorded by ESPN's live broadcast, the now-viral clip shows Trump greeting Kennedy with a handshake and looking past Hines, who was seated next to her husband.
Social media users immediately reacted to the tension, with some calling it uncomfortable and dismissive. Referring to Hines’ role as Larry David’s wife on the popular HBO comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm, one user on X quipped, writing:
"Cheryl Hines getting blown off for a handshake by President Trump is just missing the Curb theme music."
"God her face….never put your hand out like that….she should know better" said an internet user.
"That's definitely an awkward moment to witness!" remarked another.
"Curb your expectation Cheryl" quipped another user.
"If this guy did this to my wife I’d resign on the spot. RFK’s wife Cheryl Hines deals with the convicted felon like a champ though." commented a X user.
"Donald Trump snubbing Cheryl Hines is literally a real life Curb Your Enthusiasm moment" said a user.
While most comments online discussed the uncomfortable nature of the meeting or poked fun at Cheryl Hines, some of them pointed out the fact that Donald Trump did return to greet her later during the live broadcast.
"He didn’t see it. He went back later to talk to her. Stop trying to stir up shit." Commented one person.
"This is clickbait. He did shake her hand." one user stated.
A look into Cheryl Hines’s controversial relationship with Donald Trump
Hines has publicly accepted that she has had trouble accepting the fact that her husband, Kennedy, suspended his independent presidential campaign and started endorsing Trump.
In previous interviews, Hines called herself a lifelong Democrat and expressed doubts about supporting Trump. Kennedy, in August 2024, told TMZ that Hines never supported his decision to endorse Trump, but eventually did so out of love.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. even once joked that his marriage might not survive if he ever took the vice presidential offer from Trump.
Hines has also been particularly vocal about Trump’s behavior, especially about his past treatment of women, including the infamous tweet in 2016 attacking Senator Cruz’s wife. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Hines said she needed to “let go” of being frustrated with Trump’s rise in politics.
"I was holding on so tightly for so long. Even when Trump was elected, I had to really have a long talk with myself because I thought, ‘I’m not going to make it through these four years,'" she said in a statement.
