Jorja Smith’s rise to fame

In 2016, Jorja Smith shot to popularity upon the release of her single, ‘Blue Lights.’ Added to British radio playlists the same week the single was released, 'Blue Lights' helped Smith get on the radar.

Smith was further catapulted to fame when Drake picked her single ‘Where Did I Go?’ as his preferred tune for a list by EW. Some of her prominent singles include ‘On My Mind,’ ‘Lost and Found’ and ‘Loving You.’ Smith is all set to go on tour in the UK and Ireland in 2025.

London-born rapper AJ Tracey’s claim to widespread fame was his 2019 single ‘Ladbroke Grove,’ named after the area where Tracey grew up. His debut album, which featured the track, became 2019’s second most popular independent UK album. His other popular tracks include ‘Bubble Bath’ and ‘Butterflies.’ The 2025 edition of the Reading and Leeds Festival is all set to feature Tracey.

Incidentally, Tracey’s ‘Ladbroke Grove’ contained a sampling of Smith’s track ‘Wandering Romance’ from her 2018 album Lost & Found. However, this wasn’t the only time Smith and Tracey’s careers have intersected.

Jorja Smith and AJ Tracey’s collaborations

In 2019, Smith and Tracey came together on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge to perform a cover of ‘Flowers,’ a chart-topping 2000 hit by British band Sweet Female Attitude. The cover became an instant hit - the performance video is currently at 11 million views on YouTube.

Tracey recalls that he wanted Smith to work with him. He said,

“I’ve been supporting her, just following her journey. I really appreciate her vocals, she is local to me so I thought I’d just see if she could jump in.”

However, since they both were working on separate albums at the time, Tracey ended up sampling her vocals for ‘Ladbroke Grove.’

It’s safe to say that everyone is geared up for what Jorja Smith and AJ Tracey have in store. They have lit up the internet with their announcement of the release of ‘Crush.’ We have our ears perked up for the combination of Smith’s stirring vocals with Tracey’s innovative beats.
