John Mulaney says, “You don’t know what happened,” as he riffs on Gene Hackman's death investigation

John Mulaney could not resist broaching the circumstances behind Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa’s tragic deaths. On the April 23 edition of Mulaney’s comedy talk show, Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney, the 42-year-old comedian poked fun at the way the Santa Fe police made concrete conclusions despite the mysterious nature of the couple’s deaths.

Mulaney compared the conclusions drawn by the Santa Fe police investigation to the way scientists hypothesize about the disappearance of dinosaurs. Mulaney quipped:

“Scientists are now like, ‘We believe dinosaurs were killed 66 million years ago by an asteroid,’…Stop. You don’t know that. We don’t even know how Gene Hackman and his wife died, and we found their whole bodies with full clothes on, one week after the event. How about that Santa Fe police? ‘Uh, hello. Press conference No. 470. We now believe that a rat bit Mrs. Hackman, turning her hands into mummy hands.’ Just slow down. You don’t know what happened.”

John Mulaney finds the conclusive closure of the investigation absurd

During his talk show appearance, John Mulaney took a dig at the twists and turns that each report about the mysterious death of the Hollywood actor and his wife presented.

Mulaney’s Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney, which airs on Netflix with a new episode every week, is known for its comedic exploration of the absurd beneath the surface. In his take on the investigation surrounding Hackman and his wife’s deaths, John Mulaney explored the tragic mystery surrounding the circumstances in which the deceased were found, and further questioned the confident conclusions drawn by the investigation, despite the twists and turns.

When the deceased couple was discovered by the authorities, their bodies had already started decomposing. According to reports, it seemed apparent at the time that the couple had passed away at least a few days before they were found. It was further reported that the couple had been out of contact for about two weeks before their bodies were discovered.

According to investigation reports, the bodies were found fully clothed, and a detailed medical examination concluded that there was no sign of physical trauma, either internal or external.

The shocking news came with some other intriguing details. According to initial reports, officials found a dead dog near Arakawa’s deceased body. As per ABC, the dog’s body was found in a crate close to where Arakawa’s body lay.

Apart from the dead dog, officers who performed the initial search around the couple’s residence also found two dogs in the compound. According to E! News, the dogs were roaming around the house when the officials arrived at the scene.

As per New York Post, the two dogs had been wandering alone for a few days without their owners. The doggy door in the residence allowed the two dogs to get access to food and water. However, according to the investigation reports, the third dog died of dehydration and starvation. As per a report by CNN, the investigators could not give a conclusive answer as to why the dog was found dead in the crate near Arakawa.

Similarly, there was confusion regarding the timing of Arakawa’s death. Initial reports had suggested that she died on February 11. However, as per a report by The New York Times, doubts emerged about the timeline of the couple’s passing when phone call evidence suggested that Arakawa had contacted a medical facility on February 12, a day after she was presumed to have died.
