“John Candy's the best” - Joey Lawrence recalls fishing trip with late comedy legend

In a recent conversation, Joey Lawrence, 49, opened up about his special memory of fishing with the late John Candy. He walked down the memory lane of enjoying his first-ever fishing experience with the iconic comedy star.

The ABC Afterschool Specials joined his siblings, Andrew Lawrence and Matthew Lawrence, on a panel at 90s Con, organized at Hartford's Connecticut Convention Center in Connecticut.

During the conversation, the Brotherly Love actor recalled his experience of fishing with Candy when they were co-starring in Summer Rental, a 1985 movie.

According to a People Magazine report, Lawrence shared this unforgettable and exciting anecdote while responding to the question asking about the craziest thing that he came across while acting on a set.

Remembering his time with John, Joey shared,

"I caught a flounder in St. Petersburg, Florida, with Carl Reiner, who's a very famous director, I didn't even realize who he was, but he was very famous back in the '60s, the '50s and '70s."

He added,

"Anyway, I was doing a movie called Summer Rental with John Candy. I caught a flounder. First time I'd ever fished. An incredible-size flounder. I guess it was a massive flounder, and the chef cooked it and John Candy ate it for lunch."

Lawrence expressed his love for the late star and admired, saying,

"John Candy's the best."

Directed by Carl Reiner, Summer Rental's filming started on March 18, 1985. Its shooting continued till May 15, 1985, primarily in St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach.

In this 1985 film, Lawrence portrayed the character of Bobby Chester, Candy's son. John's role was named Jack Chester.

How did John Candy die?

On March 4, 1994, the actor passed away at the age of 43. He suffered from a heart attack, causing his unfortunate death. According to a report by The Mirror, he lost his life while shooting for Wagons East, his last film. It was an unexpected incident at the set developed in Mexico's Durango.

Following his demise, John was survived by his spouse and children, who grieved his loss. A breakthrough moment in his career was appearing on Second City Television in the 1970s and 1980s. Some of his iconic on-screen roles were portrayed in Stripes, Splash, Summer Rental, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, The Great Outdoors, Uncle Buck, and Cool Runnings.
