Jessica Simpson celebrates 7 years of sobriety

Jessica Simpson, in an Instagram post on November 1, made an announcement as she celebrated 7 years of sobriety. The post featured a black-and-white image of the musician looking out of a plane window with the caption:

"7 years ago today I walked myself into the light of being alcohol free.

The singer started her sobriety journey on November 1, 2017 and has since been vocal about her struggles with post-addiction.

In a November 1, 2024 Instagram post featuring an image of Simpson facing the sunlight, she looked back on her journey mentioning that the photo was from November 1, 2017.

"This person in the early morning of Nov 1, 2017 is an unrecognizable version of myself. I had so much self discovery to unlock and explore. I knew in this very moment I would allow myself to take back my light, show victory over my internal battle of self respect, and brave this world with piercing clarity.

Jessica Simpson's memoir, Open Book which was released in February, 2020 looks back at her battle with addiction, what led to it and her journey towards overcoming it.

In her book, the singer mentions that she was s**ually abused as a child, and that the trauma from her abuse, coupled with the stress of being a singer led her to depend on alcohol and drugs.

"I was killing myself with all the drinking and pills. Giving up the alcohol was easy. I was mad at the bottle. And how it allowed me to stay complacent and numb."

In November, 2020, Jessica Simpson announced that she was partnering with Amazon Studios to create two new series' inspired by her memoir and the essays she wrote about motherhood and gratitude.

After the release of her memoir, the singer appeared on the Today Show and discussed alcoholism with host Hoda Kotb. Simpson revealed that she had started a "spiral" and "couldn't catch up" with herself. The singer realised that her drinking was getting out of hand but found it difficult to stop, since she was an "all-or-nothing girl."

The singer had a special glitter cup on hand that was filled with alcohol and had to give it up. Her memoir also talked about her reason her marriage with Nick Lachey ended in divorce in 2006 after being "crushed by the media and ourselves."

The singer then began dating John Mayer, who made her "feel insecure" in the relationship, leading her to start drinking.
