Jessica Simpson's documentary in the works: Everything we know so far

Singer and actress Jessica Simpson’s documentary series is in the pipeline. A Deadline exclusive from September 10, 2024, revealed that the multi-part documentary will explore her life and career. The new project will be created in collaboration with producer Van Toffler and the production company Gunpowder & Sky.

Simpson’s documentary promises a raw and intimate glimpse into her personal journey. It will reveal private moments and explore the recent highs and lows of her life, including personal revelations, successes, and heartbreaks that have not been previously disclosed to the public.

Jessica Simpson allegedly expressed excitement about working with Toffler, her long-time supporter. As per the Deadline report:

“With exclusive access to Jessica’s own personally shot, never-before-seen footage, the doc will dive deeper than ever into how Simpson continues to evolve artistically, defy labels, and persevere in the face of major adversity.”

Jessica Simpson said her 2020 memoir Open Book resonated with readers, and she looks forward to sharing more about her life. The documentary will explore her religious upbringing, experiences with abuse, divorce from Nick Lachey, and her self-titled clothing line. She has three children with her husband, Eric Johnson.


Jessica Simpson’s documentary will have a bildungsroman approach

The documentary will track her journey through personal transitions and challenges as she reconnects with herself and overcomes pain. It aims to inspire others to believe they can achieve the same. According to the producer, Jessica Simpson was prepared to return to the spotlight.

He praised her for her bravery and honesty, recalling their meetings during her early music career and the challenges she faced during the Newlyweds reality TV series. Toffler also acknowledged that her journey has included significant highs and lows, but she has continued to thrive.

A release date for the documentary has not yet been announced. According to Toffler:

“Having had the pleasure of meeting Jessica while I was at MTV – during her burgeoning music career and amidst the tempest that surrounded her during Newlyweds – I’ve seen her bravely wear her heart on her sleeve and punch back with unyielding honesty.”

Gunpowder & Sky will produce the documentary in collaboration with Paisley Productions. The Oscar-nominated Laura Checkoway, known for Edith+Eddie and The Cave of Adullam, will be directing it.


The production company is working on several projects, including a Myspace documentary directed by Tommy Avallone, two audio music stories (Lighters in the Sky and Shelved), and various VR projects.
