Jeannot Szwarc, director of Jaws 2, passes away at 85: Reports

Jeannot Szwarc, who was known for helming films like Supergirl and Jaws 2, tragically passed away on January 15, 2025. He had turned 85 just two months before his demise.

This information was put out by actress Jane Seymour who had been a part of Somewhere in Time, a film Szwarc directed in 1980. She took to her Facebook account to announce this tragic news to the world. People took to social media to pay their last tributes to the director. This includes his Jaws 2 actor Jeffrey Kramer who bid him a goodbye through Instagram.


Jane Seymour pays tribute to Jeannot Szwarc

In a Facebook post, Jane Seymour wrote about Jeannot Szwarc:

"Today, we say goodbye to a true visionary. Jeannot Szwarc was not just a brilliant director but a kind and generous soul. He gifted us many timeless stories, including Somewhere in Time, a film that changed my life forever. May his memory be a blessing, and may his artistry live on in our hearts,"

She also shared two black-and-white pictures of herself with the director. Meanwhile, Jeffrey Kramer shared a picture of himself with Szwarc and wrote:

"RIP my dear JEANNOT SZWARC One of the finest most talented souls I was privileged to know!"

Several people took to the comment section of both these posts to pay a final tribute to Jeannot Szwarc. One person called him a 'class act' and expressed their grief, another one mentioned how Szwarc and Kramer were good friends.


Who was Jeannot Szwarc?

Jeannot Szwarc was born in Paris on November 21, 1939, and grew up in Argentina. After finishing his education at Harvard University, Szwarc ventured into the entertainment business and started working as a director for television.

Some of his directorial works include episodes of shows like The New Perry Mason and Rockford Files. He started in the 1960s and had cemented his name in several decades and he was associated with projects of different kinds. In 1978, Szwarc gained popularity for directing Jaws 2 which was a direct sequel to Steven Speilberg's Jaws.

Despite the film getting a mixed response initially, in later years it has been regarded by many as the finest sequel in the franchise. In the later part of his career, the French filmmaker directed some episodes of Grey's Anatomy as well as Smallville among others.

Szwarc saw many highs in his career both in films and television. While some of his work is well known, some couldn't get enough recognition. His career spanned many decades as he delved into different genres of work throughout. An entire generation of people might only know him for Jaws 2. However, he also also done extensive work in television.
