Jane Fonda was honored with the SAG Life Achievement Award on Sunday at the 31st Screen Actor Guild Award. Julia Louis-Dreyfus gave her a beautiful introduction while presenting her, with the award.
The "Grace and Frankie" actress went up on stage to give a passionate speech, reflecting not only on her illustrious career and personal journey but also acknowledging the current political climate in the country.
"Your enthusiasm makes this seem less like the twilight of my life and more like a 'Go girl kick ass.' Because I'm not done" she said.
She further continued:
"For a woman like me, who grew up in the 40s and 50s, when women weren't supposed to have opinions and not get angry, acting gave me a chance to play angry women with opinions, which, as you know, is a bit of a stretch for me. We must help the vulnerable. We must find ways to project an inspiring vision of the future " said the acting legend.
She also pointed out that:
"Make no mistake, empathy is not weak or "woke" and "woke" just means you give a damn about other people."
As the actress took the stage to accept her award, there was a slight problem. She started by saying:
"This means the world to me!"
However, she quickly realized her voice was being drowned out by the applause. Realizing the apparent technical difficulty, she remarked that she would speak loudly.
What about the sound system? she said
Before adding:
"I am gonna talk loud" she said before continuing with her speech.
This was not all. Even during her inspiring speech, the "Barbarella" star faced a string of issues, as technical difficulties continued to plague her speech.
"I have had a really weird career," said the actress reflecting on her illustrious carer.
The next line of her speech was once again drowned out by a sudden burst of static, accompanied by garbled noises.
"Totally not — as my agents there at that table will testify to — totally unstrategic."
The icon that she is, persevered through her speech. But the biggest problem came when she was once again interrupted, not by random sounds, but by a pre-recorded announcement, that echoed:
"Here at the 31st-" before being stopped.
Jane Fonda who is known for her quick wit, lightened the moment by jokingly adding:
"I can conjure up voices!" leading to everyone joining in and have a shared.
This incident prompted many fans to take to social media to express their opinions.
One person said:
"What’s happening with this sound system during Jane Fonda’s speech is embarrassing."
"What is that dentist office sound going on while Jane Fonda is speaking? #SAGAwards" pointed out this user.
