James Mangold's upcoming directorial venture Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi is currently in the making and is expected to receive passionate reactions from fans considering the franchise's massive appeal. Mangold decided to share his thoughts on this coveted project and the creative direction he hopes to take.
Mangold's distinct creative vision doesn't come as a surprise, considering the iconic films he has previously made. His Girl, Interrupted (1999) and Walk the Line (2005) helped its stars achieve Oscar glory. Later, Ford v Ferrari (2019) showed his prowess at giving an adrenaline rush.
Logan (2017) showed him crafting a heartbreaking story about the beloved X-Men character. Later, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023) showed him having fun with another fan-favorite franchise. Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi is likely heading in a similar direction.
In a recent interview, Mangold stated the creative freedom he hopes to have while scribing Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, without being bothered by the franchise's pre-existing lore.
Let's dig deeper into what Mangold says about his latest Star Wars project.
James Mangold speaks about Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi
Logan director James Mangold has taken a herculean task to direct the upcoming Star Wars prequel titled Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi. He is co-writing this project with screenwriter Beau Willimon, who also worked on Tony Gilory's Andor.
During a recent interview, Mangold revealed how he plans to approach writing the upcoming film. Here's what he said,
“To me, the really important aspects are the freedom to make something new. [Screenwriter Beau Willimon] and I, in relation to Star Wars, have been working on a script, and we’ll see what happens,”
While speaking about this project set in a galaxy far far away, Mangold adds,
"The Star Wars movie [Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi] would be taking place 25,000 years before any known Star Wars movies take place. It's an area and a playground that I've always [wanted to explore] and that I was inspired by as a teenager. I'm not that interested in being handcuffed by so much lore at this point that it's almost immovable, and you can't please anybody."
While the new Star Wars project is on Mangold's table, he is currently relishing the success of his Bob Dylan biopic - A Complete Unknown.
The 2024 musical has been receiving nominations almost every day for its performances and direction. Mangold recently got nominated for a DGA (Directors Guild of America) award, which brings him ahead in the Best Director Oscar race. So, it looks like the upcoming Star Wars project is in good hands.
