Wicked has a lot of great songs and scenes, and both go hand in hand as the story advances. Every watching eye holds a different perspective, and they may have their moments that others may not see. Jon M. Chu, the film's director, recently shared his perspective on this particular song in the critically acclaimed musical that outright gave him the goosebumps.

The movie had a great run as it has grossed over $700 million by now, it's nominated for a barrage of awards and running for the Oscars, and we are likely to see part two of the film in November 2025. Major characters including Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo), Glinda Upland (Ariana Grande), The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum), and more will come back for hopefully another beautiful musical.

Chu was talking about I'm Not That Girl in Wicked

There is a bittersweet moment in Wicked when Elphaba and Fiyero visit this enchanting forest to set the lion cub they have rescued from the unscrupulous Professor Nikidik's class. This is where she shares a moment with Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey). That moment reflects her love for him.

Sadly, he prefers Glinda. And then we see her singing I'm Not That Girl, as enchanting as the forest. Jon M. Chu told CinemaBlend in an interview a few months back that

"One of the most goosebumps moments was I'm Not That Girl, of course. You have Cynthia singing and that beginning moment, and if you watch it, it's almost like the music comes from nowhere. And we couldn't actually hear, it's only in her ears unless I put my headphones on.

And this moment of the set of Wicked gets more magical as he goes on to explain how the birds began singing when they heard her.

Every song in the film carries a different and some deeper meaning. So much that tears rolled down Cynthia Erivo's cheeks when she was filming it. That she shared on her Instagram post when the film was still in development.

In a list Billboard published last year, they put the song at number seven, while Defying Gravity was at the top. Defying Gravity is the final musical number in the film where Elphaba becomes the proper Wicked Witch of the West following her realization that the Wizard of Oz isn't who she had thought.
