Matt Bomer recently reflected on his s*xuality being outed by the media.

The Mid-Century Modern star, 47, first came out during an award speech in 2012. At the time, he thanked his husband Simon and their three kids and called them his "proudest accomplishment." During his recent appearance on Jesse Tyler Ferguson's podcast, Dinner’s On Me, he addressed the rumors circulating in gossip blogs and news sites about his s*xuality at the time.

He told Ferguson during the segment that no one wanted to give him the platform to come out on his own terms.

"I just didn't have a career that warranted that," he explained. "And so it felt kind of unfair to me, that that was stolen by people who did have a microphone at the time."

He also noted that it was a weird time for him, especially because he never kept his s*xual orientation a secret.

"It was a weird time. Even when we were walking around in the streets, you know, there'd be pictures of Simon and our kids and I," he explained.

Matt Bomer reportedly revealed last year that being outed ended up costing him the role of Superman in a film that was to be made by Brett Ratner. He told Ferguson that in the days leading up to the 2012 Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards in Palm Springs, California, he began feeling that he didn't want his family:

"to feel like they were some kind of shameful secret or, something I was sweeping under the rug so I could have a great career."
“It was that time when folks could kind of take over your own personal narrative before you even had a chance to,” Matt recalled. “I remember outlets talking about my personal life before I had ever had a chance to even do it myself. And it wasn’t because I didn’t want to, I didn’t even have an opportunity to.”

Matt Bomer regards his chance to come out publicly as perfect; however, he noted that thanking his family as he was being given a humanitarian award was "what someone would do in this circumstance.” He said that career-wise, he didn’t “have anything to fall back on," but he had his family, and that was the most important thing for him.

“What I had was a loving family. That was my safety net,” he said. “And I was like, you know what? If the worst that happens is that I don’t work again and I have this beautiful family who I love and who loves me, then so be it.”

Matt Bomer eventually nabbed several prolific roles, including in series' like Fellow Travelers.
