Legendary soul singer and pop icon Dionne Warwick has stirred up the internet with her candid thoughts on modern music and the ongoing feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. In an interview with NPR, titled Nobody Asked for This (But I’m Gonna Tell You Anyhow), which came out on Friday, September 27, the singer commented on Lamar's Diss track, Not Like Us.

Dionne Warwick first questioned their motive behind taking to the studio to battle out their differences for the whole world to see. She said:

"This is the look of ‘why’? I don’t think that this should be a public thing. So as far as I’m concerned, I’m not going to rate this one."

Regardless, the internet was set ablaze, as many informed her of what a diss track is supposed to be.

More people pointed out that she might not fully understand hip-hop culture to comment on it. However, others simply defended her, noting that she was right to say that:

"I love her but I don't think she understands Hip-Hop culture enough to have an opinion on a diss track lol," one user noted.
"Somebody gotta tell yall niggas the truth since yall think it’s just drake fans. Not like us is distasteful & yall look crazy dancing to it. Don’t matter if it was about Drake or not," another said.
"75% of rap today would be distasteful to a 80 year old... so what," one user said.

More netizens took to the comments section to weigh in:

"It should be no surprise that Dionne Warwick, who stood with Melba Moore and C. Delores Tucker against Gangster Rap and in favor of it's censorship in the 1990s, would find a 2024 diss Record 'distasteful' lmao. People really don't know they history any more," one user claimed.
"She has always been a safe artist. Never pushed the envelope, never advocated for her people, and never tried to appeal to her black audience. So she doesn’t qualify to speak on Kendrick Lamar who is doing all those things," another claimed.
"All respect to her, but I don't care about her opinion on hip hop rivalries," someone shared.

Dionne Warwick says she cannot relate to Sabrina Carpenter

During the interview, Dionne Warwick also weighed in on other songs of contemporary music, such as Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, and Sabrina Carpenter. For Roan's Good Luck, Babe!, the singer likened it to none other than ABBA, bestowing it with four-and-a-half Dionnes.

"She’s got her own thing going on. That’s a wonderful thing."

For Charli's Guess, Dionne Warwick gave it a four and admitted she hadn't heard about her album, Brat. She then moved on from Lamar's diss track to Sabrina Carpenter’s Please Please Please, which she also gave four and a half Dionnes. However, the singer's Espresso didn't rub Warwick the right way. She was asked if she could relate to the lyric, "I’m working late ’cause I’m a singer," to which she said:

"That does not resonate with me."

Kendrick Lamar's diss track spent several months nestled in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.
