The renowned comic and television showrunner, Whitney Cummings, has caught herself in a political controversy since her appearance on CNN’s New Year’s Eve broadcast. Cummings went viral after unleashing a roast at CNN and the Democratic Party during the airing.

Her ability to criticize across political lines suggests that she is neither a Republican nor a Democrat. She has stressed the value of listening to opponents in a series of interviews.

As she co-hosted the live broadcast with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen, Cummings criticized both CNN and the Democratic Party. One of the standouts was her take on President Joe Biden’s age and reelection run. She said:

“The Democrats couldn’t hold a primary this year. They were too busy holding up a body upright.”

The comedian took a jab at CNN by pointing out the lack of viewership experienced by the company:

“I’m now playing, you know, like 3,000 seat theaters, which is about the viewership of CNN these days.”

Cummings also sneered at the absence of choice in the Democratic primaries, saying:

Kamala was pushed on us so hard you’d think she was patented by Pfizer or Moderna.

Anderson and Cohen did not speak up, even after the comedian took shots at the network.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, she spoke about her interest in devil’s advocacy, in attempting to empathize with those with whom she disagreed, including supporters of Trump.

While working on the Roseanne revival, she also faced the challenge of portraying a conservative family authentically, while trying to balance her progressive views. “To represent someone is not the same thing as endorsing them,” she said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Whitney Cummings has also criticized the Hollywood culture of shutting down people with opposing political viewpoints, calling it 'weird.'
