DreamWorks' The Wild Robot was one of Universal Pictures' highest-grossing animated films, surpassing $300 million in earnings worldwide and debuting with positive reviews from all viewers. Based on Peter Brown's novels of the same name, the film was released in 2024. The film's ending also opened potential routes for a sequel, and thankfully for fans, Director Chris Sanders has already confirmed The Wild Robot 2.

In September of 2024, Sanders spoke to NBC about his willingness to create a sequel, as he stated,

“I would very much like to. I think the entire crew really, really involved themselves in this film in a way that I’ve never seen before, myself included. This was a labor of love on the part of everybody at the studio, and yes, I think I’d love to go and stay here for a while.”

Lupita Nyong'o, who voiced the titular robot in the film, also stated that she would love to revisit the character, thanks to there being three books in the series by Brown.

“Oh, my goodness, yes. I mean, I love Roz. I love this project. It's a good thing Peter Brown wrote three books! I would revisit her in a heartbeat.”

Just a month later in October 2024, the Director confirmed that they're working on a sequel. Speaking at Contender, Sanders said,

“100% yes there are absolutely plans for a second one"

What is The Wild Robot about?

The Wild Robot features a robot called ROZZUM unit 7134 — “Roz” for short. Roz is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and is forced to adapt to the environment under difficult circumstances. Over time, it develops relationships with the animals on the island and becomes the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling in the film, which is based on Peter Brown's award-winning bestseller of the same name. The film heavily focuses on environmental themes and attempts to raise awareness of climate change. Dreamworks also collaborated with Universal's GreenerLight Program and the Natural Resources Defense Council's Rewrite the Future initiative for the project.

Brown wrote three books, the first of which is The Wild Robot. The second novel in the franchise is titled The Wild Robot Escapes, which will most likely be the inspiration for the sequel.

Sanders has previously worked on successful projects like How to Train Your Dragon and The Croods and will be working on Disney’s Lilo & Stitch. He is also credited with the screenplay for The Wild Robot.

The Wild Robot is available to stream on Prime Video.
