Will Rothschild of the reclusive Rothschild family unexpectedly passed away when his house caught fire in the Hollywood Hills on the night of November 27. Per the Daily Mail, LA's Fire Department responded to calls about an inferno blanketing the 8500 block of Lookout Mountain Avenue at around 4:40 p.m. PT.
In the wake of the tragedy, netizens have begun looking into the family's net worth, with many speculating that it clocks in at trillions. While reports online are conflicting, a Business Insider report from February puts the family fortune at $1 billion.
The Jewish banking family ascended to power in the 18th century, and by the next one, were widely assumed to be the most wealthy family in the world. However, by the 20th century, family fortunes began dwindling due to it being divided among several descendants.
Will Rothschild's neighbors saddened to hear about his passing, say he was a "good neighbor"
Per the Daily Mail, it took 45 firefighters and about 33 minutes for them to break in, access, restrict, and completely put out the flames billowing inside the two-story home along the hillside. The LAPD has revealed that the inferno was contained to the first floor of the home, and failed to spread to the surrounding buildings.
Upon arrival, crews were confronted with a deceased adult man, reportedly in his mid-80s. While the cause of his death has yet to be uncovered, and his identity has been kept under wraps, neighbors have identified him to be Will Rothschild, ABC7 has reported. Further details surrounding the incident, like how it started, remain unknown at this time.
No other injuries were reported on-site, and per the Daily Mail, neighbors were initially under the assumption that the house was vacant, while others were upset over his passing. Per ABC7, a neighbor, Jim Moore, said:
"It is very sad. He was a good guy. A good neighbor."
Will Rothschild was a millionaire, or some might say, billionaire, recluse who reportedly resided in a home that spanned 825 feet, and had two bedrooms and one bathroom. Located on Laurel Canyon in Hollywood Hills, it was built in 1937 and is reportedly worth $1,076,000 today.
Will Rothschild also boasted ownership over dozens of real estate and a fleet of high-end cars. One of his neighbors, Brian Linse, told NBC Los Angeles that Will's "thing was cars. He was an expert on vintage race cars, and he would show me some of his vintage race cars, and he knew so much about them." He also revealed that Will owned one of Frank Sinatra's vintage race cars and a red Porsche, once owned by the late Michael Jordan.
