More about the life and career of Nicky Katt
Nicky Katt was born on 11 May 1970 in South Dakota. The Snow Angels actor has been acting from the early age of seven. He was first casted in an episode of the fourth season of the 1980 TV show, Fantasy Island.
During a 2008 interview with IGN, Nicky Katt discussed what drew him to the role as Nate Petite in the 2007 movie, Snow Angels. He said:
"Well, I very rarely will go see a movie twice in the theater - I mean, not out of superstition or anything, it's just rare when [I say] "I'll go see that again!" But when George Washington came out I remember being really struck with David [Gordon Green's] sensibility. You know, if you see a picture of him he looks like he's 14, he's got like band-aids on his knees. I kind of followed his career, but then a friend of mine, Josh Lucas, ended up working with him on Undertow and had a really good experience with him, and we have a couple of mutual friends because David has been living in New Orleans recently and I have some connections there."
He further added:
"So when I read something and like it really kind of go for the throat, and I know a lot of people were up for it but I was lucky enough to go and have a coffee with David before I screen tested and really get a low down of what he wanted. He kind of told me this guy wears, like, white, tight denim jeans and has a comb in his back pocket and he's like the real deal. You can just kind of tell when you're right for something and you can really bring something to the table, so it all worked out and we had a great time."
Nicky Katt married actress Annie Morse in 1999 and got divorced in 2001 after two years of marriage. The former couple met in Austin, after Katt shifted there at the suggestion of fellow actor Steve Zahn, who suggested he live somewhere he would enjoy living. Katt had earlier lived in Austin for a brief period in the 1990s while shooting films directed by Richard Linklater.
As a child actor, Katt also has a string of small screen appearances, that included The Love Bug, Voyagers!, Quincy, CHiPS, and Herbie among others.
Nicky Katt was known for his portrayal of often antagonist or rather insensitive characters in movies like A Time to Kill, where he played the role of a white supremacist, or the Way of the Gun, where he essayed the role of Obecks, a bodyguard assigned to a powerful man. His other appearances include School of Rock, SubUrbia, Insomnia, and Sin City, among others.
Apart from his appearances on TV and film, Nicky Katt was part of the off-Broadway production of Woody Allen's 2004 play A Second Hand Memory, where he played the character of Eddie Wolfe alongside Elizabeth Marvel, Dominic Chianese, Beth Fowler, and Michael Mckean, among others.
Katt, during his 2008 interview with IGN, also mentioned the directors he one day hoped to work with. He said:
"But I'd like to work with David Lynch, I'd like to work with Jim Jarmusch, there's a couple of people left on that list; I really want to work with Michael Mann and I tested for something for him a couple of weeks ago, so keep your fingers crossed. He's a real filmmaker, that guy."
He was also known for lending his voice to the video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, where he voiced the character of pilot Atton Rand. One of Nicky Katt's most iconic performances was in Boston High as Harry Senate, a geology teacher at the fictional high school, who is dedicated to helping his students and turning their lives around.
Although Nicky Katt never directed a film, he had once expressed his desire to branch out.
"Not at all. I'm an actor first, but as far as branching out, I have such an affinity for actors that I think I could, you know, direct them (laughs). I think like definitely John Cassavetes and I don't want to put myself in the same sentence as all of these people, but you sort of get this itch where you're like, wow, I've been in all of these movies, maybe I can make one."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Katt's last screen appearance was in 2018, in an episode of the comedy drama, Casual, as the character of Cyril. According to the statement released by his lawyer, Nicky Katt died in Burbank, California, although a cause of death has not yet been released.
