Karla Sofia Gascón, nominated for Best Actress for her performance in Emilia Perez chose not to walk the red carpet although is seen attending the ceremony later on Sunday.
Karla Sofia Gascón, who is married, has attended numerous award ceremonies in the past, including the Golden Globes 2024 alongside her wife, Marisa Gutiérrez. However, Gutiérrez was absent from the Oscars tonight and was not seen accompanying her wife.
The Emilia Perez star previously received widespread backlash after her series of hateful tweets from 2020 and 2021 came to light in the wake of her historic Oscar nomination. In response to the controversy, Gascón withdrew from Oscar campaigning and released this statement of apology on Instagram.
"Following Jacques interview that I understand, I decided, for the film, for Jacques, for the cast, for the incredible crew who deserves it, for the beautiful adventure we all had together, to let the work talk for itself, hoping my silence will allow the film to be appreciated for what it is, a beautiful ode to love and difference. I sincerely apologise to everyone who has been hurt along the way”
In his opening monologue, this year's host, Conan O'Brien, made a subtle dig at the actress referencing her series of racist tweets. He said
"I loved Anora. I really did. Anora uses the f word 479 times. That’s three more than the record set by Karla Sofía Gascón’s publicist: ‘You tweeted WHAT?'”
The Emmy-winning comedian also added:
“Karla Sofía Gascón is here tonight and Karla, if you are going to tweet about the Oscars, remember my name is Jimmy Kimmel.”
