Emilia Perez star Karla Sofia Gascón will be attending the Oscars on March 2 after her controversial allegedly racist tweets resurfaced online in January 2025. Sources confirmed to Variety that Netflix will be paying for the star to attend the ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Gascón is nominated for best actress for her role in Emilia Perez.

News about Karla Sofia Gascón's attendance at the Academy Awards comes after she posted a photo of the film's cast on February 6 on Instagram, mentioning that she'll be stepping back from the film's Oscar campaign to let the film stand on its own.

On January 20, 2025, freelance journalist Sarah Hagi shared screenshots of Karla Sofia Gascón's old tweets on X.

Hagi's post noted that Gascón had almost "a dozen" of controversial tweets. Some hinted at Islamophobia, while some even slammed George Floyd. One tweet even called Gascon's co-star Selena Gomez a "rich rat."

Gascon later apologized for her tweets after deactivating her X account and claimed that the tweet about Gomez wasn't hers during an interview with CNN.

The film's director, Jacques Audiard, publicly questioned Karla's behavior in an interview with Deadline, noting that her actions have continued to harm her co-stars, including Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez. Audiard said,

"Why is she harming herself? Why? I don't understand it, and what I don't understand about this too is why she's harming people who were very close to her."

Audiard noted that he hasn't "spoken to her" and doesn't want to, adding that the actress is in a "self destructive approach" that he can't "interfere in."

"I'm grateful to be back" - says Karla Sofia Gascón about attending the Oscars

While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter recently, Karla Sofia Gascón noted that she's grateful to attend the Academy Awards.

"I'm not sure how I feel, but I'm grateful to be back. I'm grateful to all those who've believed in me - to Netflix, the production company and my colleagues. We can close this beautiful and difficult path that began three years ago," she said.

Her confirmation comes after social media users campaigned for the actress' ban from the Oscars and other award ceremonies following her controversial tweets. Earlier this month, the actress, during an interview with CNN's Juan Carlos Arconiegas, she apologized again for her past tweets and noted that she "cannot step down" from her Oscar nomination:

"I cannot step down from an Oscar nomination because I have not committed any crime nor have I harmed anyone. I am neither racist nor anything that all these people have tried to make others believe I am."

Emilia Perez leads the 2025 Oscars with 13 nominations, followed by Wicked and The Brutalist.
