Imagine a group of sisters who share a bond so strong that even their darkest secrets can't tear them apart— this is the basic storyline of Bad Sisters, an Apple TV+ series that blends dark humor and family drama. The story is a familiar one and one might wonder where it was told before.

This comical and dark series on sisterhood and revenge did not come about out of thin air. The short answer would be that it is a remake. But—let's delve into the details about that.

Bad Sisters—Could we call it localization?

Bad Sisters is another piece added to the curious tradition of remaking successful international series and giving them local colors—mostly American. In case of The Office, the British series got an American version so popular it almost eclipsed the original. The Good Doctor is also a remake of a South Korean drama called Gut Dakteo.

In terms of technicalities, the show should not be considered a remake, but a retelling of the Belgian series Clan, created by Malin-Sarah Gozin and originally aired in 2012, reimagined for global audiences.

What is different in Bad Sisters?

Although Bad Sisters takes the essence from the original series Clan and shifts the game, it's not the same series with different actors and a new address. This is an adaptation full of personality, a different kind of humor with a modern touch that talks to the current viewers.

Since the original Clan was created more than a decade ago, we can say that it is almost like picking a classic dress and customizing it for a modern fashion show. While respecting the original, the adaptation is not afraid to venture into new paths.

While most adaptations of the international series pack up and cross borders to embrace the American hustle life, Bad Sisters decided to stay home, and quite literally. Instead of exchanging the European charm for diners and skyscrapers, the show takes place in Ireland and is a British-Irish show with the support of Apple TV+.

It is a narrative full of delightful accents, straight-from-postcards landscapes, and that typically acid Irish humor that metaphorically slaps you on the face before offering you a mug of beer.

Set in Dublin and filmed in several locations over Ireland, including Malahide Marina and the village of Howth, the adaptation remains faithful to the Clan's roots, preserving the authenticity of the original narrative while offering a new experience for global audiences that genuinely reflects the culture and the unique scenarios found in Ireland.

The brilliant mind behind Bad Sisters is Sharon Horgan, known for her sharp humor and ability to craft perfectly balanced stories that mix comedy and thrill. Also known for her work in Catastrophe and Motherland, she brought her trademark style to the adaptation, thus ensuring that the tales of the Garvey sisters would be universal and deeply personal—resonating with people from all over the world.

Malin-Sarah Gozin, creator of Clan, is also involved in the production of Bad Sisters, acting as executive producer along with Sharon Horgan and her team. Gozin's presence in the production ensures that the essence of the original series is preserved while reimagining it for a global audience.

Is there another season ahead?

While Clan had been conceived to be a limited series with a single season, Horgan and her team have decided to expand the universe of adaptation. The series' second season debuted on November 13, 2024, on Apple TV+, with two episodes on the debut date, and new episodes being released on Wednesdays, in a total of eight chapters. No news of a third season has been released yet, though.

What is to come for the Garvey sisters? We will have to wait and see.
