Actor and professional wrestler John Cena appeared on The Pat McAfee Show on April 22, 2025, where he opened up about how he was forced to get a hair transplant surgery. However, he accepted that there was no shame in trying to fix a problem and said it was a work in progress.
Pat McAfee mentioned that the teasing about John Cena’s hair seemed to have worked out well. He joked that Cena's hair looked better and that he had stepped up his game. Cena responded that he understood that sometimes facing uncomfortable comments can be helpful.
He added that it would have been nicer if it had not become a public issue. The wrestler said:
“But in unison you chant and you make me feel small and you embarrass me, like you all don't know what that's like. That is straight up bullying it is and that's just not cool.”
Cena said that the teasing got to him so much that he ended up getting a surgical hair replacement. He sarcastically thanked people for pushing him to that point.
John Cena explained that after he underwent a hair treatment, he noticed signs in the crowd pointing out his bald spots. He mentioned that part of the process involved the old hair falling out to make room for the new growth.
He had the treatment done in November, and by January or February, the hair on the top of his head had partially fallen out, making the changes more noticeable.
John Cena said he hadn’t shaved for many years and couldn’t grow a mustache
John Cena shared that some fans told him he didn’t look great in the ring, which bothered him. He explained that while he was focused on doing well in the Royal Rumble, people kept pointing out his bald spot. He felt it was unfair since hair loss was something he couldn’t control, and it happens to the majority of men.
“By the way, thank you for being so aware of my needs and emotions cause you guys ripped me to shreds for a genetic problem that I can't control.”
In the show, Connor from Massachusetts joked about whether John Cena had thought of bringing back a mustache, but Cena explained he couldn't grow facial hair and hadn’t shaved in a decade. Connor suggested the situation is different now, and Cena humorously asked if he could get some hair on top of his head instead.
Pat McAfee jumped in, saying Cena looked good and something seemed different. Cena confirmed he had done something and joked that it was working because he listened to his fans. When someone else on the podcast asked about his secret, Cena explained that hair from the sides of his head was moved to the top, comparing it to taking healthy lawn grass and planting it in dry patches.
John Cena shared that his hair was growing and hoped it would look better in a few months. He joked about possibly ending up with a full head of long hair, but admitted that growing a mustache wasn't an option since he couldn’t grow facial hair.
