In a video posted on October 10, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson shared his thoughts on World Mental Health Day. He urged people to check in on their loved ones.
"Everybody is fighting demons, and a lot of people keep it in, a lot don't talk about it, and I've learned that the hard way over the years.
The Rock added:
I check in and say, 'How's your heart? What are you feeling?' You'd be surprised at what that means to people."
While opening up about his personal struggles with mental health, The Rock mentioned that he's aware of what it's like to battle mental health issues and called it "bouts of mental hellness."
The actor continued to say that he's used to "being alone" since he's an only child, but there's a difference he's learned over the years between "being alone" and "loneliness." He added that he had a "multitude" of friends who decided to "check out" and couldn't handle the pressures of life.
More about Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's battle with mental health
This isn't the first time Dwayne Johnson opened up about battling mental health issues while urging people to check in on closed ones. During an appearance on The Pivot Podcast on May 2023, Dwayne recalled his school days:
"(I) didn't want to go to school, I was ready to leave, I left school. I didn't take any midterms. At that time...I didn't know what mental health was, I didn't know what depression was, I just knew I didn't want to be there."
The Rock gave credit to his friends on whom he could rely and pick up the phone for the following:
"Hey you know I'm feeling a little wobbly now, got a little struggle happening, I'm seeing a little grey and not the blue."
Earlier in 2021, during an interview with Men's Health, Johnson shared that he wasn't taught to communicate his feelings or ask for help while growing up. He clarified that asking for help is "not a weakness" and is "our superpower." He empathized with men who fall into the "trap of being averse to vulnerability" since they want to be "strong" and feel like they "can take on the world."
In another interview with Men's Health in 2022, The Rock recalled that he turned to the gym while battling depression. He felt that going to the gym would give him a little bit "more clarity."
