Kanye West claimed that X owner Elon Musk unfollowed him on the platform. The rapper announced the news on February 9, as he tweeted:
"Elon was forced to unfollow me. He's a G. Freedom of expression is the next level of freedom. Everyone answers to someone except me."
At the time of writing, Musk has yet to comment on the news, while Kanye West's account has since been deactivated. Nonetheless, users have been reacting to the news with amusement, such as when someone said:
"if ELON MUSK is unfollowing you for being too alt right you know it’s bad."
The comments didn't end there, as scores online joined the discourse:
"Elon isn’t here for the antics. He promotes free speech, but doesn’t have to agree with what’s said!" someone opined.
"His tweets are offensive and vulgar, which clearly violets X's policy. If the policy is to be fair, he should be banned anytime soon," another claimed.
"elon musk doing the right thing for once. that’s how you know it’s bad," one user tweeted.
"I'm still not sure if this is Kanye posting, or someone hacked the profile. Some of the things that he is posting are soooooo out there! I'm serious!" a user stated.
Even more chimed in:
"Hilarious. What kind of insults do they trade? I’d really like to make list," someone tweeted.
"Took him that long," another pointed out.
"He wanted that follow back," one user joked.
"elon:"not even i would post that"," yet another quipped.
Several users online felt like Kanye West's comments may have been getting out of hand, while others felt like Elon Musk took too long in having his account taken down, citing the platform guidelines.
The masses call out Kanye West for his antisemitic claims: Read more
Prior to losing access to his account, Kanye West had been ranting excessively about Diddy, Dave Chappelle, Corey Holcomb, and Travis Scott, among others.
However, several users have been decrying him for his antisemitic claims, including Friends star David Schwimmer. The actor took to social media on February 8 to call on Musk to ban Ye. The Jewish actor, 58, wrote on Instagram,
“This is so 2022. We can’t stop a deranged bigot from spewing hate filled, ignorant bile… but we CAN stop giving him a megaphone, Mr. Musk.”
“Kanye West has 32.7 million followers on your platform, X. That’s twice as many people than the number of Jews in existence. His sick hate speech results in REAL LIFE violence against Jews.”
Schwimmer continued,
“I don’t know what’s worse, the fact that he identifies as a Nazi (which implies he wants to exterminate ALL marginalized communities including his own) or the fact that there is not sufficient OUTRAGE to remove and ban him from all social media at this point. Silence is complicity.”
In one of his earlier posts, Kanye West also referenced Musk's use of the Nazi-like salute at President Trump's inauguration ceremony in January:
“Elon stole my Nazi swag at the inauguration… yooo my guy get your own third rale,” Ye wrote, adding, “I can say Jew as much as I want. I can say Hitler as much as I want.”
Kanye West has been banned on X several times in the past, including in October 2022. While he briefly got his account back, he uploaded an image of a swastika entwined with a Star of David.
