We Live in Time star Florence Pugh criticized Hollywood's unrealistic beauty standards for women in an interview with The Times published on December 15. While speaking about her stance on women in Hollywood, Pugh said,
"I'm not nasty - I hope people think I'm kind. But there are fine lines women have to stay within, otherwise they are called a diva, demanding, problematic. And I don't want to fit into stereotypes made by others."
While talking about her experience in the industry, the 28-year-old actress said,
"It is really exhausting for a young woman to just be in this industry, and actually other industries. But I've always been encouraged to have a voice."
"I wanted to challenge how women were perceived" - says Florence Pugh
Florence Pugh has been a part of Hollywood for a decade, ever since she made her feature film debut in Carol Morley's mystery film, The Falling. The actress has since received nominations at the Academy Awards and BAFTA and has also won awards at the Screen Actors Guild and Cannes Film Festival. While expressing frustration to The Times about Hollywood's focus on women's bodies, Florence said,
"The only thing people want to talk about is useless c*** about how they look. And so I didn't care to abide by those rules. I've loved challenging ideas I don't like."
She also added,
"I wanted to challenge how women were perceived, ... make space for a version of a person that isn't all the things they used to have to be."
Her comments come after she was slammed online for wearing a sheer pink gown at the Valentino haute couture show in Rome in 2022. After the event, the actress took to her Instagram account and posted a photo of the outfit with the caption,
"What's been interesting to watch and witness is just how easy it is for men to totally destroy a woman's body, publicly, proudly, for everyone to see."
A year after the event, Florence Pugh, while speaking to Elle, also said that she speaks the way she does about her body because
"I'm not trying to hide the cellulite on my thigh or the squidge in between my arm and my b**b.
She added that she would rather be transparent about it.
The actress also recalled headlines commenting on Keira Knightley about how she "isn't thin anymore" and said she's proud to have stuck by herself and look the way she does.
