Elle King looked back at her drunken performance at Dolly Parton's birthday tribute at the Grand Ole Opry in January 2024.
Speaking to PEOPLE, Elle King discussed the drunken performance for which she had received backlash on social media.
"Try having something bad you did go f***ing viral - that was pretty hard. I never thought that a single human being would ever buy a ticket to my show again. But they do.”
She went on to add:
“I felt so afraid to ever have a drink before I go onstage again because I appreciated someone buying tickets to my concert. I wasn’t going to let them down. I did let people down. And ultimately, I let myself down that day, and I never wanted to feel that ever again ... I'm definitely able to put on a better show because of some changes that I've made in my life, and it gets me more excited."
During the performance, Elle used profanity-filled language and forgot the lyrics to Dolly Parton's song Marry Me.
"She's literally proof that angels exist" - says Elle King about Dolly Parton
While talking about her drunken performance during a recent appearance on Chelsea Handler's Dear Chelsea podcast, she explained that she had been going through "something very heavy and traumatic" at the time. She revealed that she suffers from "severe PTSD."
King noted that she was "100 percent disassociated" and was on the floor sobbing in the dressing room after the blunder. She then proceeded to write handwritten apology letters to the venue and to Parton herself. Dolly Parton called her a couple of days later and reassured her. King said Parton was "literally proof that angels exist" :
"She just gave me really kind words and told me, 'Well, Dolly's not mad. She watched you be a human being' and made me laugh."
King also noted that she had been doing things that made her proud of herself. The singer has a 3-year-old son, Lucky, and is mindful that he will find out about her actions one day and wants to be the best version of herself for him.
The singer also added that she is content and has dropped a new single High Road on September 20. She has also been putting the finishing touches to her next album, a follow-up to 2023's Come Get Your Wife.
