Singer and actress Lily Allen sat down with Miquita Oliver in a recent episode of the Miss Me? podcast where she revealed that she auditioned for a role in The White Lotus.
She mentioned that her reason for auditioning was to explore the field more as an actor. Allen said:
“I did do a self-tape for The White Lotus and obviously did not get it. But I’m a bit scared of doing self-tapes.”
Lily Allen shared that she might be open to doing auditions now because she didn’t feel like people paid as much attention to her as they used to. In the past, she was uncomfortable with the idea of casting directors keeping tapes of her and possibly sharing them. However, these days, she shared that she is not as concerned about it anymore.
In an interview with The Times in 2023, she reflected on how she led a separate life with her husband and kids. She said:
“I live quite a separate life from everybody now that I’m over here in America. I’m a bit of a loner, a bit of an isolationist.”
Lily Allen shared that she avoided thinking too much about the music industry because it made her feel frustrated and angry. She described it as being dominated by men and unfair toward women, but noted that she was no longer part of that world.
She also mentioned that since acting ran in her family, most people expected her to become an actress as a teenager. So, it surprised many when she chose to pursue a music career instead.
Lily Allen on sobriety and facing criticism
Speaking to Glamour magazine in 2023, the singer looked back at her sobriety journey. She shared that since she stopped drinking, she discovered she was a morning person and woke up at 6 a.m., something she never expected.
She also reflected on her past and admitted that while some of her actions felt embarrassing in hindsight, the issue was how those moments made her feel about herself. Concerning her acting gig, Lily Allen said:
“I’m sort of a bit of a masochist really. When I took on my first role in 2:22 A Ghost Story, I knew it was going to be a learning experience, but I was convinced that the reaction to it was going to be very negative.”
When Lily Allen was nominated for an Olivier Award, she shared that her mother reacted with surprise and honesty, even admitting she would have left the show at the interval if her daughter hadn’t been in it.
While speaking with the magazine, Lily Allen also reflected on how she was used to facing criticism about her personality or choices, but her creative work had usually been praised. This time, however, she received more mixed feedback, and what bothered her most wasn’t the criticism itself, but having to discuss it with others.

She explained that working with acting coaches for the play helped her develop her role and made her reflect on how she had previously used her success to hide from certain things.
Despite being in the public eye, she had found ways to avoid dealing with deeper issues. However, she said that facing criticism pushed her to open up and talk to others about it.
