Fashion designer and businesswoman Tina Knowles recently shared candid details about navigating motherhood with three daughters. Speaking to People Magazine for the "World’s Most Beautiful" issue, she revealed that her parents never encouraged her to pursue whatever she liked.

Hence, after her daughters, Beyoncé and Solange Knowles, were born, she ensured that their opportunities remained limitless. While Beyoncé’s career began with the girl group Destiny’s Child, Solange remained focused on dance and choreography.

However, in addition to her two children, Tina Knowles also raised Kelly Roland, Beyoncé’s friend and fellow member of Destiny's Child. As a mother, she said she brought up her kids differently because:

“All three have totally different personalities so I couldn't lump them into one category. And I always spent time with each one of them separately so that they could feel special.”

Tina Knowles shared that her daughters helped her become more confident in life. What she learnt from Beyoncé is to accept compliments without hesitation and to let go of self-doubt.

Solange encouraged her to be more adventurous with fashion, pushing her to try new styles without fear. During her battle with breast cancer, Knowles said her kids were supportive of her, adding:

“They were very supportive of me and very conscious of the fact that you have to get your mammograms on time. I think we’ve always been very close but it renewed our commitment to spending more time together because life can be short.”

Tina Knowles on becoming a singer and her relationship with Richard Lawson

Tina Knowles recently published her memoir, Matriarch, which details her personal life and her journey through motherhood. While discussing her book with Gayle King on CBS Mornings on April 23, 2025, King shared an interesting detail. She said that at one point in her life, Knowles was a part of a girl group, The Veltones.

Knowles wanted to become a singer. However, she grew up in a small town where she did not have many chances to become a singer. Her mother loved and supported her, but did not think it was a realistic goal and pointed out that no one else from their area had ever become a singer.

She stated that her journey as a singer did not succeed. However, she believed that a higher power had given her other abilities. She used these skills for the group Destiny’s Child. She helped them design costumes, hair, and assisted with rehearsals and harmonies.

Tina Knowles also reflected on her second marriage to Richard Lawson during the interview. She mentioned that she had known him for more than forty years and considered him to be a good person.

She stated that she did not regret the time they had spent together. However, she admitted to feeling some pressure about calling off the marriage. This was because many people viewed their relationship as something that gave them hope.

Even though that happened, she did not view the breakup as a sad event. Instead, it reminded her that she was still strong. Tina Knowles did not believe the reasons for the separation were important. She felt that it simply did not work out.

At 71, she finally feels secure in knowing that she is enough. She said if love didn’t come again, her life was already complete and blessed.
