Kathy Bates is currently basking in the success of her new show, Matlock. The 76-year-old plays the lead role of Madeline Matlock in the show. While there are several conversations about the show on the internet, Bates recently revealed that she has been reading some of it on the social media platform Reddit.
She recently attended Deadline's Contenders TV event and was joined by the showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman. Discussing the new CBS show, Bates recalled a particular comment she read on Reddit:
"There was a comment on the Reddit board about last week’s episode."
She elaborated:
"I’m not allowed to read Instagram or Reddit because I could see a gazillion wonderful things, then I’ll see one negative thing, and that’s what I’ll pick up on. Although I hear that it’s very human, so it makes me feel better."
Kathy Bates further talked about the comment and revealed that it was about:
"a woman who was on a jury, and last week’s episode had to do with the woman who had been on a jury and who was bullied so much that she ended up caving when the man really was innocent and had been in prison for 21 years."
Bates continued:
"This woman on the Reddit board said it really hit her hard because she had the same experience of being on a jury like that. So as a result of that, when she goes in to be called for jury duty, she explains this, and they don’t take her."
Matlock revolves around Madeline 'Matty' Matlock who is in her 70s. While she has achieved a lot of success in life, she decides to start working again. She joins a prestigious law firm where Olympia, a senior attorney of the firm, manages Matty's work. As Matty uses her experience of working in the industry to win cases, Olympia's ex-husband Jason is also intrigued by her skills.
Kathy Bates shares insights about Matlock's upcoming episodes
The first season of Matlock saw Matty joining the workforce. While it seems she has started working again casually, it is later revealed that she has a purpose. The reason she joined Jacobson Moore is to find out who concealed the documents that would have stopped opioids in the market before her daughter's death.
During a conversation with PaleyFest LA, Kathy Bates said she is excited to see the audience reactions to the show's upcoming episodes. She revealed that there will be a few heated moments between Matty and Olympia:
"There’s one coming up after this one that we’re seeing today — it’s a very complicated relationship."
The actress added:
"It’s a very complicated case with Olympia and there’s stuff going on with Olympia and Matty. And so it’s very crazy, but also very emotional."
During her appearance on Contenders TV, Bates and showrunner Snyder Urman heaped praises on actress Skye P. Marchall for excellently playing Olympia on the show. Kathy Bates said she "just love her," and added:
"We had chemistry read with about four actresses [for the Olympia role], and when she came in, she was just larger than life and gorgeous, and just very open and eager and of course, just brilliantly talented."
Bates added that she is excited for Marchall's work on the show, and how she has carried her character so far.
